I looked at her surprised. It was the last thing I expected from her. It is becoming hard to believe on her.
"Why? After all you wanted to be in my place. You wanted me to be out of his life. So why do you want to help me meet him?" I asked confused. Maybe it is another evil act.
"Because I am the one who destroyed everything. My brother was going to be married, you were happily married, our kingdom was flourishing, the trade agreement with Malwa benefitted us greatly. Our combined armies were enough to make the enemies tremble in fear, but I destroyed it all for the sake of my selfish desires. I want to make everything better now and I have a feeling that it will once you will meet Raja sa" She said to me
"How can you say that? Maybe seeing me triggers him more?" I asked her.
"No I have seen him and I know. I will not ask you to believe in me but I will help you" She said to me. Her face was morphed in guilt. I nodded my head at that.
"How did you know that I was here?" I asked her
"I knew that you would go to meet Raja sa because you can not stand a war going around, you won't be at peace. This is the only way going to the borders of our Kingdoms so I knew that you would come, I was waiting for you" She said to me smiling sheepishly.
"Hmm, I do not what to believe right now but this is the last time I am believing you" I said to her.
"I promise you won't regret it" She said with determination on her face.
"Let's go" She said and come along with me to the carvan.
Maasi was surprised to see her with me. I told her everything. She welcomed her warmly to our journey.
We passed through villages, met with all kind of people, they helped us in our journey, it was refreshing to meet different kind people. I have never travelled for this long distance, never met this much people. My circle was very limited. I felt at ease.
After 6 days long journey at midnight we reached at the borders. It was midnight so there was n war going. Everyone was inside the tents few guards were petrolling around keeping an eye on everyone.
With this much security it was hard to go to him and even hard to talk to him. Firstly we need to do something to enter inside his convoy. I have decided to reach him and I am going to do it. I turned towards Maasi and Manavi and looked at them.
"How are we even going to enter here? There is so much security around here. Once they will catch us I know there's no chance they will let us meet him, much less talk to him. They will assume the we have come here to spy on them" I said to them feeling stressed. Maybe this was a foolish idea all along maybe there's no stopping this war.
No stop this overthinking Rauank. You have to keep your hope alive. You have to stop this war, you have started it. Now everyone's life is at risk because of you, you have to make this right. Don't run away. My inner voice was shouting at me at hit or run as soon as possible but I know better than to rush. If we will rush then everything will get out of our hand. I have to take this slow.
"I have an idea" Manavi said.
"What?" I asked her.
"We are already in this banjara's outfit. If we cover our face and speak slowly we won't be easily identified. It is not like they have listen our voice before. We will say that we have come here looking for maid's job" She said to us whispering.
"Is this even going to work? Are you sure?" I asked her feeling nervous and scared. If this did not work then we all are doomed but what choice do we really have.
"Yes I am sure. I have tried this many time to roam freely on streets" She said smiling cheerfully like she knew that this will work.
I signed and pulled my veil upto my chin to cover my face. Maasi and Manavi did the same and we started walking towards the entrance of the cantonment.
A soldier approached us seeing us entering inside the kafila.
"Stop!! Who are you?" He asked us shouting as if in anger.
"Greetings Saheb! We have come here looking for Maid's job" Maasi told them standing in front of him with joined hands.
"Yes, but why did you come at midnight and who are those ladies behind you?" He asked her suspiciously.
"They are my daughter Saheb. They also work with me, there is no one at our home so I bring them with me. They will also help in chores with me" Maasi told him
"...but why this late?" He reminded his unanswered question.
"Saheb the carriage driver was very slow and in the middle his bullock cart broke so we have to come here on our foot that's why we got late" She told him with sincerity in her voice. Wow Maasi was telling him a really intresting story.
"Okay you may enter but firstly show your face to us. We can not believe so easily on you" He said with strict voice. I started panicking he may be able to identify me if he saw my face.
"Saheb I will show my face but I can not show you my daughters' face. It is against our tradition to show our daughters' face to strangers" She said lifting her veil and putting it on her head.
He nodded his head at us and allowed us to enter inside the convoy. I signed in relief.
"I will keep an eye on you all" He said and go away from us to take his position. We entered into the cantonment with smile on our face.
"That went smoothly" Manavi said.
"Wow Maasi I did know you could do that" I said to her smiling.
"You will know just stay with me a little while. I will teach you these tricks" She said laughing.
