"Come on, Cole! Just beat the living hell out him all ready!" A boy shouted as a small crowd gathered around.
"My pleasure. Alright Kuro, I'll give you one last chance to just give me your money and run away crying."
A boy with black hair remained silent, he didn't want to fight and he didn't have any money on him.
"No."
The second he said that the older boy charged at him, ready to fight. Kuro brought his arms up in a defensive stance.
"Stop!" A voice full of authority shouted.
Everyone froze as the school teacher walked through the crowd and stood between them.
"Now, does anybody want to explain to me what is going on?"
"Kuro started it, sir! He said that he wanted to beat me up and take my money! I swear that's the truth!" Cole exclaimed.
"Oh really? Then why did I hear you tell Kuro to give you his money and run away crying?"
Cole froze.
"You can't lie to me, Cole. You and your little gang are going to be sitting in detention for the next week. I told you I'd suspend you the next time I caught you trying to pick a fight, but I'm giving you one last chance to prove yourself."
The crowd soon dispersed and the teacher turned his attention to Kuro.
"I'm glad you stood up to Cole, Kuro, and that you didn't fight. You're a good kid, you know that?"The teacher watched as Kuro drew in the dirt with his shoe.
"Not really, sir. I was ready to fight him if he'd hit me."
"Well, I'm glad you're honest with me."
The teacher walked Kuro back to class and set him in his seat.
"You are going to be ready for the camping trip tomorrow, right"
"Yes, sir. I have everything already packed."
The teacher smiled and moved to the front of the class. Sitting in his chair, he ordered everyone to pull of their textbooks and begin taking notes.
Yomi watched as Kuro doodled in his notebook. The kid had already taken notes over the whole book, so he had the teacher's permission to do whatever he wanted to. Yomi had managed to get into the school under ruse that he was training to be a teacher, even though he looked like he was barely even seventeen human years old. He'd been tasked with watching over Kuro for the past few years, ever since the poor kid's mother had been murdered. Yomi wasn't human, not even close. Only thing human about him was his external appearance, which was a disguise. If he were to show his true form and follow Kuro around, the Dragon Hunters would swoop down like a bunch of starving hawks and take off his head. He'd watched Kuro grow and learn as a human for a few years now, and knew that the time had to be approaching for when the magic energy protecting Kuro was to dissipate. When it did, Yomi had to make sure they both got away at all costs. Pretending to look at his watch, he inspected the marking on his arm that symbolized his contract. Only one more line was left, making Yomi's eyes dilate in fear. Would there be enough time? It's a good thing that the camping trip is tomorrow. The further away we are from humans the better.
"Mister Yomi, are you alright? You look pale."
The sudden question startled Yomi.
"I'm fine, I'm just a little nervous for the class's camping trip tomorrow."
That was partially true, but not quite. He was really nervous about when the magic energy would fade away.
