I jumped up, my heart racing like I just ran from the feds. The clock on my nightstand blinked '5:00 AM', and I couldn't shake the feeling that something had happened.
The house was quiet, but my mind doing a mad one.
I glanced at the mirror, wincing at the sight of the dark bruise on my face.
Tears blurred my vision and I couldn't hold them back.
Why did this have to happen? I thought. Why couldn't things go right for once?
I grabbed my phone, hoping for a distraction. Instead, I saw bare missed calls from Tyler's sister, setting off every alarm in my head.
The phone slipped from my hand, hitting the floor with a thud.
Panic flooded through me and my breathing became shaky. I stumbled out of bed, rushing to Yasmine's room. I banged on her door with all the strength I had left.
"Yasmine! Wake up! Yasmine!"
The door creaked open as Yasmine rubbed her eyes in the dim light. Her face turned from annoyance to concern when she noticed my bruised face.
"Des, what the hell happened to you?"
"Where's Amaris? I need to talk to him. Now," I choked out.
Yasmine blinked, still trying to wake up. "Amaris did this??!"
"No," I said, my voice trembling. "But I need to find him. Please, Yaz"
She grabbed her phone and sat on the couch in the living room.
She cursed under her breath as she dialed Amaris's number. Straight to voicemail every time.
"He ain't answering," she said.
"What do I do?" I whispered, tears streaming down my face. "What if something happened to him too...?"
Yaz tossed her phone on the table. "Desiree, you better tell me what the fuck is going on."
I took a deep breath, trying to calm down. With tears still streaming down my face, I explained every painful detail.
"Then he... he hit me," I finally let out.
Yasmine's eyes widened, shocked and vexed. "Tyler did this to you?" she exclaimed, her voice rising.
