Chapter Five

Annie's Pov:

"I mean it's obvious right? A family heirloom. What better place to hide a messege? I mean he had to know it was gonna get back to us, right?" John b says as we drive off to the light house
"Yeah, it's possible." Kie says, she sounds like she doesn't believe it
"It could also be possible that you're concocting wild theories to help, you know, deal with you sad feels." Pole says and Kie shoot him a dirty look. I choose to not say anything to him after that comment
"Bro you know how I process my sad feels. Look at Annie, Dank bugs and the stickiest of ickies." He laughs at himself and we all shoot him a confused look
"It's not concocting if dad is clearly trying to tell us something." I say
"Thank you Annie." John b says annoyed at all of them
"If it helps you believe guys." Kie says quietly
"Look. I-I don't need a therapy session, okay? I'm not tripping out." John b says
"It's okay to trip bro." JJ says
"Look, our dad is missing, okay? You don't know what it's like to have the person closest to you vanish. And then have no idea what happened" John b says
"You just wake up every morning wondering." I finish his speech
"It's been almost a year." Kie says and John b shoots her a glare
"Hey, he could have been kidnapped, that's definitely a possibility." JJ says trying to lighten the mood
"Yeah, or he could be in a Soviet sub getting interrogated by the KGB somewhere." Pope says
"Absolutely. Or uh... Atlantis." JJ says
"JJ? Look what do you think the message is?" Kie asks
"Red field." John b says
"Red field lighthouse." I say
We all file out of the van, and look at the view. I can see why Dad loved this place so much, it may seem so simple but I can see him in the lighthouse. It's his place.
"Okay so here is what's gonna happen you guys are gonna post up and look out for bogees okay?" John b tells me and J
"Wait.. why us ?" JJ asks
"JJ , there are independent variables and dependent variables. You're dependent. We don't know what you will do." Pope says
"Shut up! Just shut up" JJ tells him
"Listen to me for a second. Pope, you stand on look out with them okay? Don't let them do anything stupid. If we get split up we meet back at JJs house." He says
"Hey, I wouldn't do anything stupid." I say crossing my arms
" it's not you I'm worried about" he says walking off with Kie
"I'm gonna work on my merit scholarship essay. I'm trying to keep felonies down to a minimum." Pope says
"All right, would you just shut up already." jj says juggling a pine cone with his feet. I go sit against a tree that looks up at the lighthouse. Dad really is all over this place.
"So uh, Watcha doin?" JJ says coming to sit next to me
"You know my dad took us here on our birthday once, we hated it. Now that I think about it, it really made him happy we even came to see what he loved." I say and put my head on JJs shoulder
"I remember one time, me and you were surfing at night, and your dad had gotten so mad when he found out that he locked me out of your house for a week!" He laughs
"And then you snuck in through John bs window in the middle of the night to tell me you were sorry." I smile at the thought
"You know, I really don't regret anything that has happened Annie, in fact I kinda can't stop thinking about it you know?" He says nervously
"Really?" I ask lifting my head from his shoulder
"Yeah, I mean it is very stupid but-"
"Stupid things have good outcomes all the time." I finish and smile
"So uhm if anything else were to happen, just know, I'm not against it." He says awkwardly
"Well I'm glad that you won't be." I say switching between lookjgg n at his eyes and then his lips.
"Good cause, you know then I would be able to do this." He says and crashes his lips into mine. For a moment I forget about where we are, who's around, the reality of the situation we are in.  For a moment everything goes quiet, even the sirens.
"Oh shit!" JJ says jolting up and grabbing hand to run toward the van we all hop in as the sirens approach louder
"So we're just leaving them?" I ask as pope starts the van
"Technically he told us too." He says driving off toward JJs house.

We sat out in the yard waiting for John b and Kie to show but they never did so eventually Pope went back home and me and JJ headed to the chateau before his dad had noticed we were there.
"Guys?" Kie says knocking on the door before coming in
"Hey Kie where's jb?" I ask
"So uhm, he actually got arrested..." she says drifting off
"Okay we gotta go!" I say grabbing the lies to the Twinkie and getting starting it
"And what exactly is you going to the police station gonna do?" JJ asks
"I don't know I have to do something! DCS is gonna find out, then we're screwed!" I say as they get into the van too and I drive off
"Let me call my dad, maybe he can- i don't know? Do something." Kie says grabbing her cell phone I can't even intervene, normally I would never ask her to do something like this or even let her but  I can't risk losing John B right now too. We got to the police station joes dads truck was already there with nobody in it yet so Kie decided to go in. I sit here shaking my leg nervously maybe he can't get him out because he's not a guardian or something?
"Hey look there they are." JJ says opening the door
"If you skip out on your bail and I lose my money, I'm gonna hunt you down and skin you!" Kies dad says
"Dad!" Kie says
"Thank you Mr c" John b says
"Don't thank me!" He yells and gets into the truck
"John Booker Rutledge what the hell!" I yell
"Oh hey Annie." He says
"Are you okay? Are you shot or something? What happened?!" I say frantically
"I'm fine, should caught me, that's all." He says
"Your never leaving the house again understand?" I say
"Yes mom" he say rolling his eyes
"Get in the van." I say pushing him away for me c's truck
"Could you uh, drop me off at work?" He asks
"After you get arrested now you want to work?" I say
"Just let him go Ann." JJ butts in
"Fine." I say
