"Sen," Lián calls, "come set the table. Supper is almost ready."

"Okay!" Sen yells from the balcony where they were playing.

A moment later Lián hears the faint clinking sound of them placing the dishes and utensils. Humming to himself he fills a colander with greens and rinses them over the sink. He shakes the water off and frowns down at the green leaves.

Should I go to Calista and Aria's birthday party? It is a question that has been bothering him the last few days. And now it is the night of the party and he still hasn't answered it.

If he did decide to go, he would have to sneak out. Hyacinth would never allow him to go to their birthday party, which should be reason enough to not go but he wouldn't allow the lunches Lián has been having with Calista and Aria either and he is still doing those.

Going to a birthday party seems like a step beyond that though. There are more people, more things to control or lose control of, more chances of Hyacinth finding out. It's dangerous and his life is already dangerous enough.

Lián hears the front door open and guiltily sweeps his thoughts away as if Hyacinth can read his mind. Sen runs into the kitchen, frightened by Hyacinth's arrival. Lián gives them a task to do at the counter and goes to greet Hyacinth.

"Hello, darling," Hyacinth kisses him.

Lián returns the kiss trying not to shiver in disgust. "Supper is ready."

"I am not interested in food," Hyacinth runs a hand down Lian's neck his fingers brushing over the healed bite mark. "I want your blood."

"Very well," Lián replies evenly. "May I get Sen settled first?"

Hyacinth frowns but he lets go of him. "Don't take long. I'll shower while I wait."

"Thank you," Lián says going back to the kitchen. He hears a scurry of footsteps just before he opens the door. Sen is standing at the counter where he left them, but they look a little guilty. "Were you eavesdropping?"

"He drinks your blood," Sen says in answer. "I thought that was illegal."

"It is." Vampires were not supposed to drink vampire blood. They reacted to it differently than when they drank the blood of other races. It quickly became an addiction and turned them into cruel and violent, bloodthirsty monsters.

"Why does he do it then?"

Lián takes a bento box from the cupboard and begins to fill it. He doesn't look at Sen. "Hyacinth is favored by the king because of his power. He became addicted to vampire blood long ago and the king allows him to pursue his appetite for it as long as he does not kill a vampire unless ordered to."
