The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the backyard. She had only stepped away for a moment before things seemed to get rowdier, as they usually do when their friend group is together. After all, it is rare for everyone to be together in one place for more than a few minutes. Either Owen gets angry and wants to leave, or Carey wants to do something outlandish, causing everyone to disappear.

Agnes was carrying another plate of homemade cookies, trying to navigate through the crowd to reach the dessert table. She was always a shyer friend compared to everyone else and so she moved like a mouse.

As she stepped onto the lawn, her foot caught on a hidden sprinkler head. She stumbled forward, the plate of cookies flying out of her hands. Agnes let out a small yelp as she braced herself for a fall.

But before she could hit the ground, Devin was there, his strong arms catching her just in time. He steadied her and then looked down at the scattered cookies with a grin.

"Looks like you were about to make quite the entrance," Devin teased, helping her back to her feet.

Agnes blushed, her cheeks turning a rosy pink. "I can't believe I tripped. These cookies were supposed to be my contribution to the party."

"Didn't you literally just set up the whole table earlier? I think you contributed enough." He chuckled a bit.

"Still, these were the ones that Nick and Wyatt raved about. Now it is ruined." She pouted slightly before turning to look up at the older.

Devin chuckled, bending down to pick up the cookies. "Don't worry, Agnes. I think they still look delicious. Plus, now you have a story to tell."

"Thanks, Devin. You're always there to save the day." She laughed softly, appreciating his light-hearted approach, "I swear I need to watch out more often."

He handed her the plate, now with a few fewer cookies, and smiled warmly. "You probably should?" He laughed a bit, "But otherwise I am sure that any of us would help you out. I am sure that I don't."

Agnes's heart fluttered at his words. "You're too sweet."

Devin leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a playful whisper. "You know, if you keep being this clumsy, I might start thinking you just want me to catch you."

Agnes giggled, feeling a mix of embarrassment and delight. "Maybe I do," she replied, surprising herself with her boldness.

Devin's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Well, in that case, I'll always be here to catch you, Agnes."
