Scene Three: Ignorance Is Bliss
Instead of going to lunch where her ‘friends’ are, Julie goes to the library. A place where she can get some quiet time. Julie doesn’t think she can stand it in the loud and crowded cafeteria. Plus she still isn’t hungry. She feels her appetite has fully disappeared.
Julie sits on a small couch that’s behind multiple book shelves. Her eyes closes, she’d been trying to hold them open all day. She doesn’t know how much longer she can keep awake. She starts to drift off when she remembers the little girl’s face. Her eyes—or lack of. Her crooked smile that sends chills down Julie’s arms.
Julie’s eyes flash open and she sit back up on the couch. She is fully awake now. No coffee or energy drink can do what she’s feeling now. she decides that instead of fruitless at sleeping, she should do something productive. She walks over to a school computer and logs on to her account. She pulls up the internet browser. What is she going to look up? She doesn’t have any homework to finish or any projects to do. She ponders this for a moment.
Her fingers seem to have a mind of their own when they type random letters. Julie doesn’t know what she’s searching until her pinky presses the ‘enter’ button. Her fingers typed in the five words she resents the most at the moment. A few thousand results come up for ‘The Man In the Abyss’.
Julie clicks on the first one.
THE MAN IN THE ABYSS: FACT OR FICTION?
This creepy nursery rhyme has been passed down for generations. It all started when a local boy of Abyss Town goes missing in 1945. The boy was last seen on the Abyss cliff the night before he want missing. His parents’ claimed that he had been having reoccurring nightmares about a lake weeks before he went missing. People who worked at the abyss cliff for construction purposes recovered a body of a boy about seventeen in the Abyss Lake at the bottom of the Abyss cliff, years later. His eyes’ were gauged out and his teeth were broken. The autopsy report uncovers that that was the missing boy.
Years later a girl goes missing, again last seen at The Abyss Cliff before the day she was reported missing. Again, her parents claimed she was having reoccurring nightmares weeks before she went missing. Her body was found when she was eighteen, with her eyes gauged out and her teeth missing.
In the period of ten years, twenty-nine children were found missing and then found in The Abyss Lake dead. The construction site was forced to close down because of the dangers of The Abyss cliff. Despite the restrictions of The Abyss Cliff, children still went missing, but people feared the cliff so the bodies were never uncovered.
