Scene Five: Determination Leads to Termination
After hours of lying in her bed thinking about what Damon said, Julie gets a phone call from the house telephone. She walks down stairs slowly to the kitchen where her dad is. He picked up the phone before she even made it to the kitchen.
“Yeah, she’s right here.” Her dad says through the receiver with a small smile. He hands her the device and ruffles her hair is a childish manner, like he did this morning. “It’s for you kiddo.” He tells her and exits the kitchen.
“Hello?” She speaks through the receiver. She decides to go to her room for the call. She exits the kitchen and starts to walk up the stairs again.
“Julie! I’m so glad you answered!” Damon’s voice exclaims from the other end. Julie immediately thinks about hanging up the device but then realizes that that’s not going to do any good. Damon would keep calling until she answered the phone or her dad got irritated enough to make her answer the phone.
“Hi, Damon.” She says slowly in a soft voice. She sits at the end of her bed, running her fingers through her messy hair, props to her father. Her voice probably sounds raw from all the crying she had been doing earlier. She isn’t particularly mad at Damon. Really, she’s mad at herself for being so weak and lifeless. What made her like this?
“I’m so sorry, Julie! I didn’t even know what came over me; can you please forgive me?” Damon pleads through the phone. In all her years of being friends with Damon she had never heard him beg like the way he is begging her now. Does Damon really value their friendship that much? She isn’t anything special, just an empty girl like he told her earlier.
“I can’t be mad at you for something that’s true.” She whispers so softly that she can barely hear herself; but Damon sure did hear her.
“Julie what I said is not true! I was just angry and confused, and things just started to blurt out of my mouth. Please don’t believe anything I said.” Damon pleads once more, making Julie cringe. She hates that her best friend is in pain, especially if she’s the one causing it. Even though Damon said mean and hateful things, she couldn’t blame him. He was only telling the un-denying truth.
“Okay. I forgive you.” She tells him softly while lying down on her back. How could she not forgive Damon? Even after all the horrible things he had said to her, she still can’t keep her heart from swelling every time she hears his lovely voice.
“Oh thank God!” He yells in relief, making Julie smile at his goofiness. All the things he had said to her are now in the distance past. “Can I come over? You left your bag in my car.” He tells her. Julie totally forgotten about the bag she left in his car. Now that she thinks about it, it’s probably the reason why Damon called her house phone instead of her cellphone.
“Um…yeah. That’s fine.” She mumbles as a reply. She knows her dad won’t mind if Damon comes over, he never does. Damon is a good, trusted, family friend that her dad really likes. Sometimes Julie thinks that her father would rather have Damon as his child instead of her. She doesn’t blame him. If she had a daughter like herself, she would want Damon to be her son instead of someone like her.
“Cool, I’ll be there in two.” He tells her and then hangs up. She can already see in her mind, Damon running out of his house and into her’s with unstoppable speed.
Julie gets up from her position and goes into her bathroom to check any signs of her recent cry. Her eyes are a bit puffy and red, but other than that she looks okay. She just hopes that Damon can’t tell she had been crying. She doesn’t want any more prying questions from him.
