[ study buddy ]❝I'm sorry, Dad, how do you
mix up Anton and Sophia?❞𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐀 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐀𝐓 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐊𝐄𝐑, trading her history textbook for her math one when she felt a pair of hands tickle her in the sides and she yelped. "Son of a—" She turned around. "Austin!" she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around him, and hugging him tightly. "You're back. How was the lacrosse tournament?"
Austin Hall chuckled as he hugged the girl back as tightly before she let go. "It was good," he replied. "But I heard I missed the biggest change. Your cousin started here?"
She sighed and closed her locker. "Rory," she confirmed, nodding toward the brunette who was still trying to find all of her classes.
"And how has it been?" he asked. Amelia glanced at him with a shrug. "Right." He nodded and walked in step with the girl. "So, hey, can I ask a favor?"
"You always do," she said with a teasing smile and he chuckled. "What's up?"
"Well, because of my lacrosse tournament, I missed some of the lessons for our math test coming up," he replied making her nod. "Any chance you could come over tomorrow and help me study? Your notes are always the most detailed."
She held a hand over her heart. "Oh, you flatter me, Hall." She shrugged with a nod. "Sure, I don't have any plans. Rosie's out sick and Tristan is..."
"Being Tristan?" Austin guessed.
Amelia clicked her tongue and pointed at him. "Bingo," she said. "Oh, which reminds me, if you see him at all today, keep him away from Rory."
"Uh—why?"
"He keeps calling her Mary," she said simply before entering their math class. Austin paused in the doorway.
"Oh," he replied before his face scrunched into disturbance. "Oh."
After an excruciatingly long math lesson—well, for Austin, anyway—the two friends found themselves walking down the halls of Chilton, lost in conversation. Austin was the type of person who was easy to talk to; he had one of the purest souls of anybody Amelia had ever met.
"What do you mean you have to have dinner with your grandparents every Friday?' Austin asked with a frown and looked down at Amelia who shrugged. "If the whole point was for your grandparents to pay for Rory's education, why are you and your parents being dragged into it?"
"Thank you!" Amelia exclaimed, gesturing at him in victory. "I had the same thoughts. But, you know, Emily Gilmore knows how to get what she wants. Except Mom won't even be at the dinners most of the time. So, it's me and Dad against the grandparents."
Austin fluttered his lips. "Lucky you." She glared playfully at him and he smiled back innocently. "So... how are things with your mom?"
She let out a heavy sigh and shrugged her shoulders. "Was that a good enough answer for you?" she replied and he pressed his lips together. "I don't know, she... She's my mom. There's not much else I can say."
