Haley's words hung heavy in the Tuscan air, the weight of her confession pressing down on them both. Nico stared at her, his expression a tumultuous blend of shock, relief, and a simmering sense of betrayal.
"The truth?" he echoed, his voice tight. "What do you mean?"
Haley took a deep, shuddering breath, her eyes shining with a mixture of fear and determination. This was the moment she had been both dreading and longing for – the moment when she would finally shed light on the secrets that had been festering for far too long.
"Nico, I..." She faltered, her throat constricting with a swell of emotions. But she pressed on, steeling her resolve. "It's about Gretchen. And... and Luca."
Nico's brow furrowed, his confusion mingling with a flicker of suspicion. "What about them?"
Haley swallowed hard, forcing the words past the lump in her throat. "Gretchen lied to you. About being pregnant."
A heavy silence hung between them, punctuated only by the distant chirping of birds and the gentle lapping of the pool water. Nico's eyes widened, his mouth falling open in disbelief.
"What?" he breathed, his voice barely above a whisper. "How... how do you know?"
"I overheard her on the phone," Haley confessed, her cheeks flushing with shame. "She was bragging to her friends about how gullible you were for believing her lie. She... she said she was going to fake a miscarriage when you got back home, to try and keep you trapped with her through guilt."
As the words tumbled out, Haley watched a myriad of emotions flicker across Nico's face – shock, anger, hurt, disbelief. He raked a hand through his hair, his eyes squeezing shut as if to block out the truth he didn't want to hear.
"That manipulative little..." he muttered, his jaw clenching. He let out a mirthless bark of laughter, shaking his head in dismay. "I can't believe I fell for her act. Again."
Haley felt a pang of sympathy amidst her own swirling guilt. Gretchen's web of lies had ensnared them all, it seemed.
"Nico, I'm so sorry," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "I wanted to tell you sooner, but she was always hovering, and I... I just couldn't find the right moment."
Nico's gaze snapped back to her, his eyes burning with a mixture of hurt and accusation.
"Is that all you've been keeping from me, Haley?" he asked, his voice low and laced with tension. "Or is there more?"
Haley felt her heart plummet, the weight of her other secret pressing down on her like a physical force. This was it – the moment she had been dreading for three long years.
"No," she whispered, her voice trembling. "There's... there's more."
Nico's jaw tightened, and he straightened in his chair, bracing himself for the blow he knew was coming.
"It's about Luca, isn't it?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Haley's breath caught in her throat, and she could only nod, her eyes brimming with unshed tears.
Nico let out a shaky exhale, running a hand over his face. "I knew it," he murmured, more to himself than to her. "From the moment I saw him, I just... knew."
A heavy silence stretched between them, laden with all the words left unspoken, all the moments they had missed.
"Why didn't you tell me, Haley?" Nico finally asked, his voice laced with a painful mix of hurt and longing. "Why did you keep him from me all this time?"
Haley's defenses crumbled, and the tears she had been holding back spilled freely down her cheeks.
"I was scared, Nico," she confessed, her voice cracking with emotion. "After that night in Amsterdam, I panicked. I wasn't ready to be a mother, and I didn't know if you would want to be involved. It just seemed... easier to disappear."
