Gretchen lounged poolside, basking in the Tuscan sun as she chatted with her friends on the phone. A sly grin played on her lips as she recounted the events of the past few days.
"You won't believe how gullible Nico is," she scoffed, rolling her eyes. "The moment I told him I was pregnant, he bought it hook, line, and sinker."
She paused, listening to the voice on the other end of the line. "Of course it's a lie," she snapped. "But it's the perfect way to keep him on a leash. Once we're back home, I'll fake a miscarriage and use his guilt to make sure he stays with me."
Gretchen's laughter rang out, sharp and hollow. Little did she know, her words carried across the villa's courtyard, where Haley stood frozen, a basket of freshly laundered linens clutched to her chest.
As the weight of Gretchen's deceit sank in, Haley felt her heart clench with a mixture of anger and pity for Nico. She had to warn him, to let him know the truth before it was too late.
That evening, as the guests mingled on the villa's terrace, Haley kept a watchful eye out for Nico. But wherever she looked, he seemed to be glued to Gretchen's side, their bodies intertwined like vines on a trellis.
Haley's jaw clenched with frustration. How could she possibly warn him with Gretchen hovering like a vulture?
As the night wore on, Marco noticed the tension etched across Haley's face. Quietly, he pulled her aside, his brow furrowed with concern.
"Haley, what's wrong?" he murmured. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
Haley let out a shaky breath, her gaze darting around to ensure they wouldn't be overheard. "It's Gretchen," she whispered. "I overheard her talking on the phone earlier. She lied to Nico about being pregnant."
Marco's eyes widened in disbelief. "That's low, even for her," he muttered, shaking his head. "But why would she do that?"
"She said she's going to fake a miscarriage when they get back home," Haley explained, bile rising in her throat. "She wants to use his guilt to keep him trapped with her."
Marco's expression darkened, and he cursed under his breath. "That manipulative little--" He cut himself off, taking a deep breath to compose himself. "Have you told Nico yet?"
Haley shook her head, frustration flickering across her face. "I've been trying, but she never leaves his side. I don't know how to get him alone."
Marco's brow furrowed as he considered their options. Finally, he met Haley's gaze, his eyes filled with determination.
"Look, you can't let this go," he said firmly. "Nico deserves to know the truth, no matter how ugly it is. If you can't get to him tonight, we'll find a way tomorrow."
Haley nodded, steeling herself with a deep breath. As much as she dreaded the confrontation, Marco was right – Nico needed to know what kind of person Gretchen truly was.
"You're right," she agreed, squaring her shoulders. "I'll keep trying tonight, but if that doesn't work, I'll tell him everything tomorrow. He deserves better than her lies."
Marco gave her a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. "That's my girl," he said with a proud smile. "Just say the word, and I'll run interference with Gretchen if I have to."
Haley felt a surge of gratitude for her cousin's unwavering support. With Marco by her side, she knew she could face whatever storm was brewing on the horizon.
As the night wore on, Haley kept a watchful eye on Nico and Gretchen, determined to find her moment. She owed it to Nico – and to herself – to finally shed light on the truth, no matter how painful it might be.
