The tunnel we traveled through led us to the labs, as Ada promised. Of course, as with the Police Station, the Labs were empty as well. Quite a few zombies were staggering around, so I stayed in a room while Leon and Ada killed them. In the empty room, with only papers and a desk, I noticed there was a phone. I checked it out, picking up the receiver.
There was a tone.
My heartbeat wildly.
Without hesitation, I dialed my parent's phone number, praying they would pick up. Please be okay, I thought to myself. I let it ring about ten times before someone picked up. My father. "Dad? It's me, Alina."
"Alina?" my father said, sounding surprised. "We've been... worried about you. We heard about what happened in Raccoon City. Are you okay? Where are you now?" I wanted to tell him everything that went on the past several hours but with the cold, unpleasant glare Ada was giving me, I decided not to. "I was stuck in the Police Station. I'm fine – I – I am with someone who can protect me."
"Who are you with?" my father asked, a bit concerned.
"His name is Leon Kennedy. He found me in the Police station, but are you and Mom, okay?" I left out the part where I was nearly mauled by a zombie a few times, and the injury on my leg that was surprisingly healing quite well.
"We're fine aside from being worried sick. Your mother won't stop pacing the room. We tried calling you several times at your apartment, and the station won't even pick up. What exactly is going on over there?"
"I can't say anything right now, but I can tell you when I get home. I will arrive home. For now, I gotta be careful."
"What do you mean you have to be careful? Alina, please tell me what's happening!" my father's voice was becoming more concerned by the second, but I had no time to explain further.
"Just... Know I love you, and Mom."
"We love you, too. Alina, where are you?"
"I'm at –"
The phone line went dead. "Dad?" I spoke. I looked beside me, seeing Ada with the phone cord in her hand. She smiled at me coldly. "What the fuck did you do that for?!"
"Time's up," Ada said, coldly. "We don't have time for silly phone calls to family."
I shook my head. "I wasn't done with the conversation yet, Ada."
"Like I said, not the time or place. You are lucky I even let you call them."
"I don't need your permission."
She frowned. "This is the thanks I get after saving both you and Leon twice?"
"Well, luckily he wouldn't go anywhere near you if you hadn't saved us," I snapped at her. Maybe I shouldn't have, but the phone call ending abruptly made my blood boil.
"You're right about that. He wouldn't because he'd be dead right now from those dogs if I hadn't shown up."
I shot her a glare, warning her to back off. "Sounds like you have no faith in him. You'd be surprised what he is capable of, and I have known him for almost half a day." Ada rolled her eyes at me, which wasn't shocking. That was usually her response.
"Enough," Leon said gently, coming in between us. He watched us arguing, having been there the entire time. "We just need to find Annette."
"What if Annette is dead?" I asked. It seemed like a valid enough question.
"We cross that bridge when we get there," Ada said, her animosity before disappearing quickly. At least for now. "Let's split up. Alina can't be by herself. So, she should be with you, Leon." He nodded in agreement. I tried not to frown at her when she said it, but I knew she was right. I was inexperienced with a weapon and having Leon by my side would help. I would only slow Ada down if paired with her. "We will meet back here in a few hours." I handed her the radio Leon gave to me so we could keep in touch.
