[Year and a half earlier]

"Yeah, Alina, you sure know how to pick 'em," my friend, Jocelyn, said, shaking her head as she sipped the strawberry milkshake she just ordered. I sighed because what she said was correct. I did know how to pick the worst guys for me. "Has Ivan the Terrible said or done anything since you two broke up?"

I shook my head at her and rolled my eyes. Once she started with the nickname for Ivan, she wouldn't stop using it, and it grated my nerves. "Stop calling him that," I said. "And no, he hasn't said a word to me. He hasn't even been in the last few days."

"I don't understand your need to defend this guy, Alina. He threatened to kill you how many times?" In the heat of the moment, during an argument, Ivan threatened to kill me, and one day, he added he would get away with it because he was smart.

"He did, but –"

Jocelyn sat back in her seat, crossing her arms. "No!" she said. "Stop making excuses for that bastard. He's done so many awful things to you!" How could I have argued with that? Once more, Jocelyn was right about Ivan because I lost count of the times Ivan told me he was sorry and would never do it again. "Can't you see he's a terrible fucking person?"

"Of course I do; I find it hard to hate him sometimes."

"Ivan, never let you see your friends or family."

"I'm hanging out with you now, right? I'm free, and he doesn't own me anymore."

Jocelyn nodded, flipping her long blonde hair back. "Good. Make sure it stays that way. Let me know if he gives you a hard time at work, and I will give him a knuckle sandwich." I chuckled at her small threat. She was very protective of me, especially since Ivan and I broke up. "Just promise me one thing, Alina."

"What's that?"

"Don't let people push you around, okay? Promise me you will try standing up for yourself."

"Y-Yeah, I will try."

Jocelyn shook her head as if she were disappointed in my answer. "As the great Jedi Master Yoda says, 'No! Try not! Do or do not, there is no try.'" She even had the same stern tone Yoda used in the movies.

I managed a smile and a soft giggle from her Star Wars reference as I finished my chocolate milkshake. "All right, Joce," I said, nodding at her, "I'll keep your promise and do it." After all, what could it hurt to have a backbone?

Back at the police station, I never thought that we would return there. Not once. Leon and I passed by the bodies we killed during our time there. Most were rotting with flies and maggots swarming them. The stench coming off them was revolting, making it much worse. I held it together, trying my best not to gag.

I closed my eyes around the bodies, but it didn't help with the decay wreaking the entire parking garage. At least the zombies were laid to rest, and we didn't have to worry about many more. Or so I thought. There were a few more that I let Leon take care of before moving forward. We had to be careful with the ammo we had. There were quite a few ammo boxes in the Kendo Gun Shop, but with what happened there before with Kendo and his daughter, Emma, we didn't want to step in unless we had to.

I never went to the Chief's office while I worked there. I saw him several times, but Irons didn't speak to me often. I witnessed confrontations with him and other law officers whom he'd threaten to fire if they did not cooperate. Marvin Branaugh gave the Chief a piece of his mind quite a few times, which surprisingly never ended in termination. But those confrontations with others were never pretty.
