Dogday stayed silent for a long minute. Everyone either turned their heads at the two or widened their eyes, already eavesdropping on their conversation.

Dogday reached out his hand, looking away from Catnap, and pulled him to his feet. Catnap still clutched his head in pain.

Dogday's tail stiffened and drooped to the ground.
He frowned. “What do you mean by you don't deserve me?“

Bobby Bearhug shook her head slowly. She had enough of Mr. Chershire-Cat-ripoff-who-can't-tell-Dogday-that-he-loves-him, since apparently, “he doesn't deserve him”. That's the most ridiculous thing she had heard from Catnap, and he gestures nonsense to her which only crazy lunatics would relate to. Like— “I don't deserve you”?

What in the goldilocks— that's what she says to that baloney!

By Catnap's body language and by the looks on his face, she knew that he was hiding something important. And what they need to do was get those secrets out of him.

“Catnap,” Bobby Bearhug sternly said, stepped up, and walked to them. “I just don't believe you.“

Catnap's eyes drifted to Bobby Bearhug, and shame appeared in the tone in his face. Dogday watched them.

“Why not? He's certainly everything,” Catnap gestured in reply, “He doesn't deserve someone like me.“

Dogday looked at Catnap, and his cheeks turned slightly red. Hearing that word—everything. Is that what Catnap really thought about him?

Craftycorn followed Bobby Bearhug, and also went closer to the three. “But you have been his best friend for years! Why are you saying this now?“

Catnap shrugged.

“Don't act like you don't know, Catnap.“

Catnap ignored Craftycorn.

Dogday turned to Catnap. “Let's talk about this once we get back to our cabins.“

Dogday grabbed Catnap's hand and dragged him away from the forest, despite his protests.

It just hit evening back in the cabin.

Dogday wrote in his diary, sitting on the chair with the desk in front of him. He wrote fast, because there was a chance Catnap could see what he was writing.

Catnap sat on the bed, not speaking a word; not making a sound either. He hated how he was forced to get back to the cabins. All he did was stare outside the window and lean on his hand.

Dear Diary,

Something bad—and strange—happened today.

Well, it all started with Catnap waking up in tears, at least that's what I assume… and incredibly early too! Six o' clock!

He went outside and cried for a while. I really want to know what is wrong with him, and what I could do to help.

And with this behavior lately… I was thinking, am I holding him back on something important? Was I not good enough of a friend?

Listen, I love him. Fine, I will own it to myself. I love him, okay? I don't know if he feels the same, in fact, I'm starting to doubt it.

He then ran away without explaination… to the forest. Then, that was the time everyone found out about… it.

I'll talk to Catnap first, and write again later.

Monday, February 26

(Write again later)”

Dogday then put his pen down, and closed his diary, not making it too obvious. He sighed.

“So, what are you doing?“ Catnap suddenly said, his head still facing against Dogday.

Dogday flinched. “Just writing.“

“That's…” he took a long pause. “That's nice.“

Dogday and Catnap awkwardly stayed silent for… a few minutes, wondering what they could say to the other.

Finally, Dogday took a deep breath, stood up, and pulled away the chair he was sitting on.

“Why did you run away?“ He asked, being more serious than he already was.

Catnap froze.

“You can't answer that question?“

“It's… nothing.“

“You can't keep on answering the same thing over and over again,” Dogday's voice trembled, “just say the truth, Catnap!“

“I told you. It's nothing.“

“Listen, Catnap,” Dogday walked closer to him. “No one avoids a person, stops talking to them, and runs away because of nothing. Am I not a good friend?“

“You are!“ Catnap blurted out, in fear. “It's just—you—I have…”

Dogday's lips quivered. “I'm your best friend, Catnap, you can tell me anything.“

Catnap hesitated. He then turned his body to face Dogday, and noisily got on his feet.

“Best friend. That's all I am to you!“

“What?“ Dogday widened his eyes. “What are you talking about?“

“Best friend this, best friend that!“ Catnap tried hard not to cry. “Dogday…”

“Catnap--” Dogday reached out his hand, but Catnap shoved it away.

“No, I can't. I cannot tell you everything, because you won't understand! You'd just… leave me behind!“ Catnap yelled.

“Leave you behind?“ Dogday lowered his voice.

“Dogday, why do you even— why do you even want to know anymore?“

“Because you are my best friend, Catnap! You have been there for me, and I have been there for you! I want to help you! I would never leave you behind!“

“'Best friend', here we go again!“

“What do you mean?!“

“We've always been best friends, and I'm tired of it!“

Dogday almost instantly stopped speaking at this statement.

“We have been friends for such a long time…” Catnap's tears swelled in his eyes. “But do we even get along? Dogday, you're Fearless-Courageous-Brave-Leader. I'm a good for nothing! Why even bother with me?“

“Catnap, you think you're...” Dogday shivered as a tear dropped from his eye. Catnap regretted everything he said.

“You are everything,” Catnap whispered, “So why would you--”

“For the last time, Catnap, it's because you are my best friend,” Dogday sniffled. “Is that not… what you want us to be? I mean, you always mention that, too…“

“You're too precious, Dogday,” Catnap wiped his tears. “To be just a friend.“

Too precious? Dogday thought, to be just a friend? What does he mean—

“I'm scared, Dogday,” Catnap said simply, then he walked to the door and went outside the cabin, to go to the beach.

Dogday heard it clearly, but he didn't know what it had meant.
