Kiara and Emily were walking together out of the arena after their first practice, talking casually. The air between them felt comfortable, but their conversations never really held anything of substance. They still had not discussed their previous relationship, only ever glossing over it and moving on.

Kiara didn't know how to feel about that. She was under the assumption that Emily just wanted closure; to make sure their past relationship didn't get in the way of them being teammates. But then Kiara thought back to dinner yesterday, Emily practically saying she was glad Kiara wasn't dating Paige.

Or, maybe, neither of them had moved on. Kiara hadn't been brave enough to ask Emily if she had seen anyone in the two years they had been apart. Kiara told herself she moved on, but all her love life consisted of at UConn was meaningless hookups and failed talking stages. She had never found another person who she connected with as deep as Emily.

But that connection might have been lost. It had been two whole years. Emily was different, but so was Kiara.

After talking about their new coach for a minute or so, Emily changed the topic, "do you wanna go get lunch? I remember you like Italian and I know a good place around here."

Kiara smiled up at the taller woman, "I'd love to."

"Great. Just throw your shit in the trunk," Emily said as she opened the back of the car, Kiara placing her gum back down.

The pair hopped in the front and pulled their seatbelts on. Emily wordlessly handed Kiara the aux cord, the former UConn player smiling and shuffling through her spotify.

"Just please don't put any of that Taylor Swift shit on," Emily voiced as she backed the car up, putting her hand on the back of Kiara's seat.

"Okay, fuck you. But I'm not playing your weird country 'shit.' I can't believe you like Luke Combs," Kiara scoffed and pressed shuffle on her SZA playlist.

"It's not 'weird.' It's just good music," Emily defended, throwing Kiara a fake glare.

"Said no one ever."

"Alright, just shut up." Kiara mockingly saluted at Emily, throwing in a 'yes ma'am' for good measure. The taller woman just rolled her eyes playfully and looked back to the road.

The two were now sitting at the restaurant, patiently waiting for their drinks to arrive

The two were now sitting at the restaurant, patiently waiting for their drinks to arrive. A couple of people were looking at them funny because of their basketball attire, but no one said anything.

"Alright, just to let you know, this place has mixed reviews," Emily spoke up as she looked at the menu.

"You couldn't have told me that sooner?" Kiara laughed.

"Well, I don't know. It was the only Italian place I knew," Emily shrugged.

"Yeah, but I'd rather not get food poisoning a day into being in the WNBA," Kiara raised a brow at Emily mockingly, the blonde flipping her off.

"Sorry, princess. Forgot you were the third draft pick. We have to keep you in top shape."

"Yeah, that's right. You should be kissing the ground I walk on," Kiara bantered back, making Emily chuckle behind her hand.

"Wait, do you remember that time when a waiter fell and spilled a bowl of soup down your shirt?" Emily laughed as she reminisced, putting her hand over her mouth as she chuckled. Kiara had noticed she still held that habit. Whenever Emily said something funny, she put her hand over her mouth as she laughed. It was cute.

"Please don't bring that up," Kiara put her head in her hands in embarrassment, "how did he even manage to fuck up that bad? The soup literally flung at me."

"And you screamed like a little girl," Emily continued, her face turning red from how hard she was laughing.

"It was burning hot! What did you want me to do?" Kiara put up a face of offense, but then started laughing with the other woman. The two's laughter rung throughout the restaurant, other tables smiling at them.

The telling of the forgotten stories never failed to cause a swell of fondness in Kiara's chest. To see the way Emily smiled simply just made the other woman happy.

Maybe the connection was still there.
