Epilogue II: Healing Old Wounds
After the meeting was over, Rocky wasted no time at all. Bursting out the hallway like an enraged child, completely baffled by the FBI's blatant ignorance.
Ryder came running after him. "Rocky! Rocky wait! Just hold on a second!"
Rocky hears but doesn't stop. "Fools! All of them are bureaucratic fools! They have no idea what they've got!"
"I know, but you can't let it bother you too much!" Ryder replies as he catches up.
Rocky finally spins around and faces Ryder. "How?! How can I not worry about it Ryder?! I just told them of the destruction it caused and they're treating it like a magic little box!"
"I know Rocky. I don't like it any more than you, but it's out of our hands now. It's up to them what they do with it." Ryder illiterates.
Rocky sits his quarters on the floor and adverts his eyes. "My sister died Ryder. She along with everyone endured a horrible death and they think so little of it."
Ryder narrows his eyes at the mixed breed. "Your sister? It that what this is really all about?"
Rocky then lets his head hang to his paws. "Maybe.....just a little?"
Ryder pops an eyebrow. "A little?"
"Well what do you want me to say Ryder?!" Rocky howls with a mixture of sadness and anger. "That I'm glad she's dead?! That I'm happy that she can't hurt anyone anymore?! That I'm so relieved she can no longer make my life a living hell?! Because I do. That's what I really want to say right now!"
Through all his might, Rocky couldn't stop the tears from falling to his paws. "That bitch spent her whole life hating me till the very end. She made it her life's goal to ruin my life every chance she got because I left her with a poor excuse for an owner, so why am I not happy about it?! Why am I feeling sorry for her right now when she did all she could to punch me down?!"
Sensing Rocky's breakdown, Ryder drops his knee and hugs him close. Letting him cry on his shoulder for his sister.
"I-I hated her Ryder. Hated Her! Wh-Why am I le-letting her get to me even now?!"
"Because you don't hate her Rocky. You still held out hope for her." Ryder expresses, letting go of him to look at him. "Can you tell me I'm wrong?"
Rocky kept his head down at his paws. "sigh, No.....I guess not. I did want to hold out for her. Despite everything, because I did love her. She may not have loved me back, but that didn't stop me from making things right so we could be siblings again. Especially since...." Rocky chokes up. "She was the only one left of my real family, and I wanted her to realize that all we had was each other."
In saying that, more tears formed in his eyes and dropped to the floor as he started to sob. "But she didn't listen! She hated my guts until the very end, and now she's gone, and I have no one left! But I'm willing to accept that because... I no doubt deserve it."
Ryder firmly grips Rocky's shoulders, hearing enough of his self-pity. "Don't ever say that about yourself Rocky. Scarlet was a bitter dog who blamed everyone for her problems. There was nothing you could've done for her."
Rocky slowly lifts his head to Ryder. "I could've hated her a little less."
"You could've yes, but you need to understand; rekindling is a two-way street. Both sides have to be willing to disregard everything and reconnect for it to work. You had all the motivation in the world to reconcile, she obviously didn't, and continued to lash out despite your efforts."
