"What does she even think of herself, coming to a sacred place like this to study when she can't even perform a single spell?"
Laughter echoed through the room, ringing cruelly off the quiet stone walls. All eyes drifted toward the girl sitting quietly to the side, her expression unreadable, unmoved by the harsh comments being flung in her direction.
"I mean, guys... It's really not her fault she was born from an affai—"
Before the words could fully escape, Na-ra slammed her hands against the table and stood. The sharp crack silenced the room for a beat. Weeks of enduring this nonsense had finally worn thin.
"Ah… it's so noisy."
Her voice was flat, laced with disdain, more exhausted than angry.
Scoffs circled the room in response.
"Na-ra, don't listen to their words… just ignore them." Yun-ok placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, a subtle plea to let it go, to not react.
Na-ra glanced at her, exhaling slowly as she sat back down, her fists unclenching. She offered a faint, almost amused smile—one that didn't reach her eyes.
But peace, even if feigned, never lasted long in that room.
Within seconds, three figures stepped up to them. The leader, Ha-yoon, stood smugly with her arms folded, flanked by two mindless replicas who followed her every move.
"Yun-ok, just be honest. You're only friends with her because you pity her, aren't you? I mean—aren't you fed up with her too? Even your grandfather seems to favour her more." The three broke into a mocking laugh, a sound that was soon mirrored across half the room in low snickers.
"Ha-yoon, please stop…"
Yun-ok's voice barely rose, her words more like a breath than a protest. She didn't argue, didn't defend. She simply bowed her head and backed down.
"Tch. Why are you begging them? It’s not like you did anything wrong."
Na-ra frowned, her voice low with frustration.
Yun-ok just gave a quiet smile in return. No defense, no anger. Just the same soft expression that always seemed to calm the storm, no matter how harsh.
"You're too kind for your own good…"
Na-ra whispered the words to herself, the hint of a smile tugging at her lips again as she turned her eyes back to her book, even as the room continued buzzing with unspoken cruelties.
