An Original Idea

Back before Dawn of the Vampires was developed. I had another idea. I scrapped it after Dawn of the Vampires became a thing because I realised that the two ideas were pretty similar. What you will read below is what would have been the first chapter. I will also mention that this was my one and only experiment with writing in first person, and I found it just made me really uncomfortable and disconnected from the story.

                          Chapter 1:
               A Chance Encounter

An eternity of loneliness. A pain that most of my kind are used to by now… Most. Not all. Certainly not me. Although I have been cursed to roam the earth forever unseen by the human eye, it hasn't stopped me from going to extreme lengths to try. Lengths that could land me in serious trouble with the leaders of my world. Though their punishments for breaking our laws are harsh, there is nothing that they could do that would hurt me. I'm already dead, and a corpse doesn't feel anything. Usually, anyway. The truth, however, is that I am not a corpse… I am not a deceased body that has risen from the grave in search of brains nor a bloodsucking demon that craves to suck the life out of a living person. I am merely a soul without a physical form… a human spirit… a ghost, if you will. After a freak accident claimed my life, I never thought I would be happy ever again. I am not happy. I will never know such joy again until I find my peace.

I walk these streets tonight as I have done every day for the past three years since my death. I stick to these paths because they are my only sense of familiarity, a constant reminder that I am not a physical being any longer. Nothing out of the ordinary was happening in the town tonight, so hardly anyone was around. Though the few people that did walk past were hurrying to get to the safety of their homes, I knew that others were out here too, and not in a hurry - one of the small comforts that I had managed to gather during this time. It didn't help an awful lot, but it did something at least. For me, the worst part of these lonely nights is that it was the same as it had always been. Nothing ever seems to change around here in a small town like this. All I could do was watch everything unfold right before my eyes, as though the town was a TV show on a screen and I was simply a viewer who could not interact with the characters. Even telly addicts could interact with people at least. They were lucky, they just didn't know it. That was the exact behaviour from them that made me want to…

My thoughts came to an abrupt stop when one of the humans caught my eye. The sight of her was completely new to me as I did not recognise her face - not that I could see clearly with her ebony coloured hair creating a mask to hide behind. Though the strangest part about this encounter was the fact that she was walking alone in an area which had little to no lighting. Her shoulders were hunched and her arms wrapped tightly around her lean figure, trying to keep in what little body heat remained. Just a look at her sent a wave of electricity over me, I briefly struggled to remember what the feeling would have felt like if I had been alive…and then as though by some force pulling me, I was yearning to know more. Instead, because of my form, I could only watch helplessly as she stalked away down the path and around the corner. If I had a physical heart, it would have almost certainly skipped a beat. As I watched from the shadows of the night, fighting the urge to follow the lone girl's path, I heard my name whispered into the gentle breeze. Having spent three years getting used to it, by now I knew exactly what it meant. Dismantling the tree branch that I was perched in, I reluctantly headed back to the ruler of my kind, the King of lost souls - Magnus. Though I had forced myself to leave, my mind still remained with the ebony haired beauty that had unknowingly passed me by. Taking one last longing look at the empty street that was now behind me, I turned back to face forward and headed back where I now belonged.

Ha! What a stupid statement to make. Where I belonged. Maybe once I had belonged amongst the living, but not for a long time. It was ironic really, that the place Magnus had provided for us, used to be a place filled with humans. These days no one dares to go anywhere near it. Now it was merely an abandoned cathedral that had already begun to crumble. A fitting place for those the same as me - a place where the dead were once laid to rest and where humans came to find peace… or at least, they used to.
