This next scene is from a book that I've been working on since I was 16. It has had numerous rewrites and reworks, and has only now started to get on track. Part of that was due to drafting scenes. This one wasn't entirely completed but went as far as it needed to for its purpose. (Please note that Rise of the Wolves and all things related are copyright protected).

           Marcus and Julie Break Up

Marcus sighed in frustration. The past few weeks, since Julie's transition into a kitsune, had been an utter nightmare. It felt as though she hadn't just changed, but turned into a completely different person. Between all of her unfunny pranks and her unpredictable behaviour, it was becoming too much to handle. He had tried to be patient, despite the hot-headed nature that came with being a werewolf, he'd done everything from shutting himself away for a few minutes at a time to talking and trying to get through to her, but it didn't matter what he said, she never seemed to listen.

He paced the hall back and forth, waiting for that inevitable knock at the door with a silent dread. What he was about to do wasn't something he wanted, but it was the right thing for her… and for him too, for now at least. She wasn't the same person he had known his whole life, and he wasn't sure if she would ever be that person again. Kitsune were known for their dual personalities, and it felt like he was dating two different girls. One being strong, independent, responsible, and the other being a reckless, mean-spirited menace.

Lost deeply in his own thoughts, he almost missed it when the knock finally sounded, but hurried to open the door. He was aware that he could be greeted by either version of her, that things could, and probably would, go horribly wrong, but he had made it this far and backing out was not an option.

“Hi.” He greeted and managed a small, fake smile.

“That's it?” She challenged, arching an eyebrow.

“What's wrong with saying hi?” He shrugged.

“Lame.” She smirked.

Marcus drew in a breath and swallowed it. He could already tell who he was talking to, and he hadn't even invited her inside yet. Though reluctant, he opened the door wider and allowed her to walk through before closing it again.

“Sooo, did you invite me here just to stand awkwardly or are we gonna cut to the action?”

“Oh no, I think you might be mi- mistaken.”

“You think?”

“Well, I- I-”

Julie's laughter cut off his sentence, but he couldn't see what was so funny to her and found his patience slipping already. He took a step back as she took one towards him, trying to maintain a little distance between them.

“Dude, chill… I'm kidding.”

“Yeah, it's kinda hard to tell with you these days.” He muttered.

“What's that supposed to mean?” She snapped.

“Look, I didn't call you here to fight. I just wanna talk.”

Julie's smirk widened, and she deliberately took a couple more steps until she was close enough to reach out and touch him. He thought briefly about moving back again, but decided against it, knowing how easy it would be for her to cause chaos if she detected his reluctance. It wasn't Julie he was talking to, not really. It was her fox spirit.

“But talking is boring.” She pouted. “Come on, isn't there something else you would rather be doing?”

Marcus grit his teeth in anger as she reached out and flicked a loose strand of his raven hair from his face. His wolf was all but ready to take over, and it took all of his self control not to let it.

“No!” He growled, and his blue eyes flashed golden.

“What's the matter?”

“Julie, this isn't you.”

“But it is… I'm still me, Marcus.”

“No, you're not.” He shook his head. “At least… not my Julie. You don't take pleasure in others' discomfort or in hurting other people, you don't abandon your own brother when he needs you the most. I know that I'm talking to the fox right now, and that's fine… but I can't do this.” He sighed.

“You what?”

“I can't do this. I'm afraid that if we continue then one of us is going to end up hurt and I don't want that. I know that you're in there somewhere Julie, and I know you can hear me… it kills me to do this, but I've gotta let you go. Unless you get your fox under control, this isn't going to work. I'm sorry.”

Julie killed her laughter instantly and the smirk was wiped from her face. Her green eyes bore into his with a coldness that, up until the fox had awakened, he'd never seen before.

“Nope.”

“What?”

“You don't get to end things between us.”

“Well, I am.” He asserted. “And you are just going to have to accept that because as much as I love you, your fox is ruining us.”

“You're the one who is ruining us, Marcus.” She hissed. “Oh well, I guess I'll just have to ruin you.”

Marcus stood up straight and his shoulders tensed. He knew that it was the fox, so her words didn't cut very deep, he was more afraid of what the fox might do to make good on that threat. Being so focused on her face, he didn't notice her hands down by her sides, where fingernails extended and morphed into claws and when she struck him, there was a second that he didn't feel it. If not for the blood that trickled from his cheek down to his mouth from the three wide scratches, he wouldn't have felt it at all. As she attempted to strike him again, he raised his arm and quickly caught her wrist in his hands.

“Julie, please. Get this fox under control. I know you don't want to hurt me, I'm begging you.”

“Begging is pathetic!” She spat.

“If that's really how you feel then I'm done.”

“You like to think you're done.” She giggled. “But I know you can't stay away from me, it was me that you ran to after your ex grew bored and took on another guy. It's always been me, and you can't pretend like I'm wrong about that.”

“You're not.” He admitted, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. “I won't deny it, but maybe it isn't you anymore. Maybe it never has been and I was just too blinded by my feelings to see that.”

“Oh please, your words aren't fooling anyone.”
