We almost didn't make it past the stupid spinning walls. My leg had been moments always from getting crushed if I hadn't been pulled by Macy in time. Now my leg hurts like crazy. Whose ingenious idea was it to create those, anyways?
Macy and I had taken three left turns when we reached a dead end. She groans in frustration. "How the crap are we supposed to get out of here? There's no way of knowing what to do."
I look over at her before focusing my attention on the floor. Looking up at the clock I see we have fifteen minutes and forty-five seconds. I start getting worried. This isn't even the second part of the maze. There is no way we'll make it to the middle in time.
"What if we there's some kind of riddle?" Macy asks, turning to face me.
I resist the urge to roll my eyes. "I honestly don't think so," I say lightly. "We have to go back."
She nods before biting her lip. "Right."
We go back and make the right turn instead. The floor opens up all of a sudden, making Macy almost fall right in. She lets out a cry and I grab her arm, pulling her back.
"What the heck?" she shrieks. "Did you just see that?"
"Obviously," I tell her, pulling her to her feet. "But we have to keep moving."
She looks at me incredulously. "There is absolutely no way we can make it past this crap, Lissa. Quit being so optimistic."
Now, I actually do roll my eyes. "Well, we can't make it if you decide you want to stand here and argue the whole time."
She glares at me. "Do you have any ideas, Lissa? Because you're just standing there treating me like I'm stupid. Tell me what your plan is."
"Can you be quiet?" I snap. "I have to think."
She groans. "We have twelve minutes. Hurry up."
Then I think of something. "Try jumping."
She looks over at me. "There's no way I'm jumping. And you can't jump either because of your leg."
I look around for a few moments. "We have to jump. There's no other way around this."
"What if we have to go inside the hole?"
My leg is killing me. Looking down, I see that it's bleeding through the bandage. I lean down to tighten the bandage around it so it can press against the wound.
Macy can't carry me if something happens. So we have to hurry. I mean, we had to hurry before but now we definitely have to hurry if I want my whole group to pass.
Macy looks at me with a worried expression. "Please tell me we're going to be okay. I can't bare thinking about what would happen if we don't make it in time."
Standing up, I turn to face her. "The only way we can cross this is by jumping, Macy."
She nods, pursing her lips. "Okay. But if I fall through its on you."
I laugh. "Totally."
~•~
We round the last corner right before the clock starts counting down the seconds."Lissa," Macy cries.
"We'll make it," I breathe. "Just keep running."
I really hope Daniel and the others made it already. We've been trying to get through the maze but it keeps getting harder. And my leg is bleeding all over the place. I've left a puddle everywhere we have stopped.
We saw the doors. They were starting to close. Macy and I ran faster than ever. Trying to dodge all the traps and stuff.
I saw Daniel and Peter. Diana pointed at us and they all started to cheer us on. We have twenty seconds.
Nineteen... eighteen... seventeen... sixteen...
I look away from the clock. "Not helping," I mutter.
Then there was another hole. It was between the maze and the middle. Macy lets out a frustrated groan. "I don't want to have to jump again, Lissa."
She was crying now. Tears spilling down her face. I bite my lip to keep myself from yelling at her. Between my leg and this stupid maze crap, I am about to lose it.
"Macy, jump," I say, calming myself down. "Just like we did all those other times."
She shakes her head. "I can't. Can't we just forget this whole Passing thing?"
"Macy," I growl at her. "Don't be stupid. Just jump. Our friends are waiting for us. If we Fail, then so do they."
She looks over at me. "Lissa, I can't. I am so scared right now."
I nervously look at the clock. Seven... six... five... "Look, I'm serious," I beg. "Please go."
She looks over at our friends and her gaze softens. "I didn't mean to hurt you guys."
Out of anger, I push her. She screams and holds on the edge. "Oh no," she cries. "Please get me out. Please."
Daniel quickly comes over and helps her out. She was sobbing uncontrollably but I am not in the mood to pity her right now. I back up a few steps before jumping myself.
Three... two... one...
The doors close behind me and I let out a breath. Daniel rushes over to me and envelopes me in a tight hug. "I was so worried about you," he says into my hair.
I pull away from him and glare at Macy. "What the heck was that?" I yell.
She gives me a sad look but doesn't say anything. She hugs herself, crying harder.
"We almost didn't make it," I spit at her. "And all because you were being selfish. I needed you to be strong that one time and you decided you wanted to give up? We were close!"
Daniel holds me away from her. Everyone else was watching. I could tell the leaders were watching as well.
Macy stands up. "You could've killed me, Lissa," she screeches. "You have no right to blame this on me."
I push Daniel away and walk up to her. "You know, all you did out there was complain and whine. You were absolutely no help whatsoever. You could have killed yourself. You could have killed me. And all for what?"
More tears rush down her face. "Excuse me for wanting to stay in one piece," she mutters.
"I had to push you!" I yell.
"That's enough," One growls. "You made it. I don't see what you are bickering about."
I don't say anything but Macy and I continue to glare at each other.
"All of you that are standing here right now---congratulations. We are done for the day. Have some rest. We shall continue tomorrow."
And with that, all the leaders leave.
Everyone was staring to leave. But not before sending me frightened looks.
"Lissa," Diana says behind me. "Please, just let it go. You guys are fine. We are all okay."
I let Daniel pull me away from her. We make it to the hallway and he pulls me into another hug. I finally allow myself to let the tears fall.
