TWO DAYS LATER, I stood in my flat with my hand extended in front of me. The sun was shining but reserved its warmth as a cool wind swept the city. The rays reflected off my official engagement ring and I admired Giovanni's work.
He had assembled my ring exactly how I envisioned it and it fit perfectly. Aren was leaning against my kitchen countertop and he was watching me silently. "Satisfied?" he asked.
I spared him a glance and looked back at the ring. It was a beautiful ring. I told him so.
"Giovanni never disappoints."
I dropped my arm down to my side and turned to face him properly. "How much was it?"
Aren chuckled lowly and the sound took me off guard. "Why? You want me to send you the bill?"
I gave him a puzzled look and my lips parted to say something back before he spoke again and stood up straight.
"It was around five hundred thousand. I didn't really focus on the specific number."
I nodded. I wasn't expecting it to come to anything lower than that since Giovanni's rings were on the luxury side. I mulled over his response for a few seconds as I realised he was caving with his retorts quicker than he did when we first met. I assumed it was because he thought he had hurt my feelings the day before. Aren was annoying and his presence was grating but I couldn't allow him to think that he could get to me or that I couldn't hand out what he was giving me.
"You didn't or your father's card didn't?" I tried to force the smirk down but was unsuccessful. Unfortunately.
Aren stared at me blankly and folded his arms across his expansive chest as he leaned against the countertop. "I paid for that rock on your finger, sweetheart."
I held a hand to my chest and cooed sarcastically. "Aren't I the luckiest woman in the world?"
"Most women would think so." He punctuated his response with a fake smile.
"There's still hope for the world then since it's not all women." I almost choked on my laugh when a flash of annoyance passed over his otherwise inexpressive face. Take that.
"Don't we have an interview to get to?" he pushed himself completely off the countertop and looked down at his watch. He had come to my apartment to pick me up and I let him up while I finished getting ready.
I was grinning to myself as I reached for my purse and phone that was on my coffee table. My phone vibrated with my eldest sister Freya's caller ID and I instantly sent it to voicemail. I knew it would turn into a three-way call with our other sister Grace and the topic would be my suddenly public engagement. I looked at Aren and plastered the grin back on my face. "Let's go, Romeo."
