With a loud huff I let myself fall on the seat. On my right side sat James, leaning back and looking pretty sceptical. On my left sat Neville, nervously shuffling his feet.
"So, which class is this again?" I asked Hermione, who sat behind me with Harold and Ronald.
"Defense Against The Dark Arts, short DADA. Shouldn't you know this by now?" She sighed and rearranged her books again
"I mean in Durmstrang we had dark arts, not really the defensive kind though." I laughed a little.Beside me, Neville shuffled nervously." Do you think Moody will be a good teacher?"
"No idea, but regarding our luck, he's probably a death eater." Hermione answered jokingly, while James was snickering in his seat. Not so bored like moments before.
"Hey!" Harold protested " Stop it, Hermione! Why would you say things like that!"
"Hey Harold! She was joking! Do you have the brain capacity of a snitch, or why are you reacting like that?" I defended my friend.
"My name's Harry, Harry Potter. You should remember the name by now.""Why? Why should I? Since I am here you have been nothing but rude, arrogant and worst of all, you have been totally unfair to your best friend! I remember the names of people I respect. You didn't do a single thing deserving my respect!"
"Hey! It's okay Liss!" Mione tried to calm me down. Ignoring the furious shouts from both Harold and Ronald, I decided that they weren't worth it.
With an annoyed huff, I turned around facing the professor who just stepped through the door into the classroom.
James gave me a victorious smile, toying with his wand, a clear warning towards the boys behind us. At least it was clear to me."Quiet!!" The class stiffened at his words,"Books away, wands out. You won't need to read in this class." A shocked gasp left Hermiones lips, as she had to put her beloved books back into her bag. Now that sounded interesting. Maybe this class would be great after all.
"Who can tell me something about unforgivable curses?" The professor started the class, writing his name at the blackboard.
"Yes Miss..."
"Granger, Professor. There are three unforgivable curses."
"Correct. What are their names?""Mr Potter?"
"The Imperius curse, Sir." I was rolling my eyes at this. I don't even know why, but everything this boy does, annoys me. Maybe I was a bit unfair to him before... Arrrgh I hate that little voice in my head, making me feel guilty. It is really not funny."Who knows the second one?" I raised my hand now, might as well try to get a good grade in this class.
"Yes." He pointed his arm in my direction.
"Alyssa Jackson, professor. The Cruciatus curse is an unforgivable curse."
I heard a painful gasp for air beside me. I whipped my head around, trying to find out what troubled Neville."You okay?" I asked him, my voice low.
"Also correct." Moody interrupted his response. The professor walked around like a peacock, as he enjoyed the silence drawn by this serious topic.
"Now there is just one left." Mione raised her hand, impatiently waiting to share her knowledge with us.James was drawing little swirls and flowers with his wand on the table. Suddenly the professor pointed in James direction,"Maybe you know the answer, if the class left you bored like this."
"Of course, Sir" that sounded very sarcastic, for everybody wondering." The last curse is the Killing curse, Avada Kedavra."The Professor gave him a nod. Then, he shuffled through his bag, retrieving his flask and three little jars. He downed a bit of the liquid before he continued the lesson.
"In this class you'll be learning not only defensive spells, but also see the spells you can be confronted with. Who can tell me the spell used for the imperius curse?""Nobody? Ms Granger?"
"Imperio, Sir."
"Alright." The professor stepped to his desk, opening a jar and pulling something out of it. It was a little black spider. Mumbling incoherent words, the spider grew bigger and bigger until it was the same size as Moodys hand."Arghh.." Ron exclaimed disgusted. In this moment I was totally with him, I hate spiders.
"Don't get this thing near me." I whispered in direction of James, who in return grabbed my hand and flashed me a smile. I gave him a grateful look and glanced over to Neville. He was stiff like a statue, panic clear in his eyes, without thinking, I grabbed his right hand, squeezing it reassuringly.
"It's okay." I whispered in his direction."Imperio!" Moody casted the spell at the poor spider, now completely under his command. He let I do acrobatic stunts and big jumps over the heads of students.
Half of the class, including myself, was taking cover.
"That's animal cruelty!" Protested Parvati, several Hufflepuffs, who were sitting with us in this class, agreed.
"This spell can control a weak mind, leading the person to do unforgivable things or let them spill out secrets. That's why it is crucial for you to know this curses."
He dropped the spider, turning his focus toward the second."Crucio!" I didn't know that spiders could scream, but this one was. It was withering around, the eight legs cramping. The professor moved the poor animal through the room, displaying his pain for all of us to see.
When he came to our desk, he saw Neville, eyes tightly shut, laboured breathing, muttering quietly to himself. He was as pale as one of the ghosts."Mr Longbottom, open your eyes. You have to look at the horrors to be able to conquer your fear!" Moody said, still torturing the spider on the wooden surface.
Slowly, Neville opened his eyes, tears brimming as he quietly pleaded him to stop.
The look in Moodys eyes fuelled my rage,' this man was enjoying the moment' I thought."Stop!" I almost screamed, jumping up, fist balled up at my sides. The professor just looked at me unfazed, still continuing.
"I said stop!" I gave him a murderous look, my voice now deadly calm, as I slapped my palm down onto the wood, standing at my full height. A gush of wind travelled through the room and I recognised the startled expression on his face.James, standing beside me, almost a head taller. His wand was drawn, his right hand in his pocket, probably holding his dagger. He gave me a nod saying ' I will always stand by your side'. Or at least that was what I understood.
The professor was starring the class down, his gaze flickering over a trembling Neville, a shocked Hermione and a proud Parvati.
With a flick of his wand, the tortured spider flew back into her jar, the third flying on his desk.
No way he would just ignore what happened here!"Now the third unforgivable curse and the most lethal one, Avada Kedavra." At the last two words, he pointed the tip of the wand at the spider, a green flash sizzling through the air and the spider dropped down. It was dead, the eight legs pointing in various directions.
A loud bell interrupted us, ending this horrendous lesson. How can they say that Hogwarts is the best school for wizards? Seriously, they should really check their professors, maybe then there wouldn't be such psychopaths teaching children!
"Let's get out here." I said, while packing my bag, simultaneously standing up with James. Hurriedly we left the classroom, ready to search for Neville, who stormed out of the room mere seconds before.
