Alex and John were following Washington around the next morning, just like any other day. Alex sighed once they stopped and Washington began talking to a general. They had been going around and telling generals battle plans, and also discussing some things with soldiers, and Alex was getting tired of hearing the same thing time and time again. Out of boredom, he would glance at John and smile or mouth different words to make him laugh.
John walked silently beside Alex, beginning to get bored himself. He noticed the glances and words mouthed from Alex. He would scoff and look away each time, pretending like it wasn't making his heart flutter the whole time.
Alex chuckled quietly, so as to not disturb the conversation between generals. He heard John scoff, but he knew John found it funny. He had been working on his friendship skills instead of his love skills, trying to make John happy. It was a bit difficult, but he was determined to make it a habit to be friends and not flirt constantly.
No matter how much John thought about it, there was a voice in his head saying he found it cute when Alex tried to be humorous to get his attention. He felt his heart skip a beat when he thought of that, immediately shutting it down. He had to keep his mind away from thinking Alex was cute and how he wanted to kiss him. He just couldn't let himself.
"Alexander," Washington spoke, turning around and handing him a wooden box, small but heavy. "Take this to General Lee's tent. John, go with him to make certain he doesn't break anything, the box is quite heavy."
Alex let out a little huff-mixed-grunt once he was handed the box. For a small chest, it was quite heavy. He and John turned, making their way to General Lee's tent.
John noticed Alex's struggle while they walked. He chuckled and rolled his eyes, "Need help carrying it?" He teased.
Alex chuckled and adjusted his grip on the box to make it easier to carry. "Quiet, you," Alex teased back. He was able to carry it, though his arms began to hurt. He was thinking of not letting John carry it so he could show off his strong arms, but then he remembered John didn't love him that way, and that John was probably stronger than him and didn't care for his muscles.
John could tell how much trouble Alex was having, making him smirk. He knew Alex would never admit it or ask for help, it was funny and cute to watch him be stubborn and show off his strength. "You know you could just ask for help, right?" He teased.
Alex chuckled again and shook his head, "I can handle myself, Laurens." They reached Lee's tent and John opened the flap for Alex. Both men walked in and Alex sat the chest on the General's bed. He took some breaths and put his hands on his hips, "What's in that thing?" He asked breathlessly.
John couldn't help but chuckle as he watched Alex try to catch his breath. He then shrugged at Alex's question and answered, "Check, I'm sure Lee won't mind."
Alex smiled, imagining they were pirates about to open a chest of treasure and gold. He opened the chest to reveal handguns, musket balls, and knives. Alex looked at John and closed the chest, "Just supplies."
John raised his eyebrows and nodded, "Well, that doesn't sound exciting." He joked with a smirk.
Alex chuckled and slowly spun around, looking at Lee's tent. It was plain, just like the others. There was a bed, desk, and a bigger chest probably filled with clothes or muskets and supplies.
He saw something in particular on the desk that caught his eye, so he walked over and picked it up. He turned to John and kept examining the object, it was a little wood sculpture of a bird. "John, you have a twin," he teased. "He likes birds as well."
"Very funny," John grumbled back sarcastically, also looking around the tent.
Alex chuckled and turned the sculpture in his hands to get a better look, then dropped it on the floor. He raised his eyebrows at his actions and picked it up, thankful it was wood. "Nothing happened," Alex joked with a serious face. He backed up and bumped the desk, making more things fall over, "oh," he said softly, turning around.
As Alex clumsily knocked more stuff over, John's smirk widened and a small blush appeared on his face. He chuckled again and couldn't help but tease him, "Nice going, genius."
"I don't appreciate your sarcasm, Laurens," Alex replied with a smirk. He picked the stuff up and placed it back where it was, along with the sculpture in his hand. He could be clumsy sometimes, though not as much as their friend, Lafayette, which he was thankful for. Lafayette would probably figure out a way to flip the bed by accident.
John chuckled again as Alex defended his clumsiness, watching silently as Alex placed the things back. He couldn't help but think how adorable it was, his heart fluttering and beating faster. He quickly dropped his smile and looked around the tent to distract himself from Alex.
Alex backed away from the desk, his leg hitting the chair and scooting it over on accident. He sighed and put it back in place before checking to make sure everything looked normal. He smiled and turned back to John, walking towards the flap, "Everything is fine," he said, "let us go back."
John chuckled again at Alex's clumsiness, smiling softly as Alex walked towards him. "Yeah, I bet Lee will appreciate you being careful," he joked as they both exited the tent.
Alex chuckled and the two men began to walk in the direction Washington was before. It was amusing when he was clumsy because it didn't happen a lot. He liked to make John laugh, so he didn't mind the teasing. His love only grew for John every day, but he couldn't show it.
John silently walked beside Alex as they strolled by tents and soldiers. He tried not to think about how adorable he was for being clumsy, how it made John's heart flutter when he did something on accident.
John was getting lost in his thoughts and feelings again, thinking about Alex's words. How he loved everything about him. He suddenly spoke up, "Alex..."
Alex looked at John with the same charm he always had, though it was in a friendly manner. "Yes?" He replied. As he looked into John's blue eyes, he truly noticed his beauty, unlike any time before. It made it impossible for him not to break and begin to flirt with John again, but he resisted.
John looked away, not able to meet his eyes for too long. Every time he looked into his eyes and saw how charming and handsome he was, John felt his heart flutter and his face go warm. John swallowed and fidgeted with his fingers as he looked down at the ground, trying to focus all of his attention on it and not Alex. "I have something to ask," he mumbled.
"Of course-" Alex said before getting cut off. Washington walked up to them and grabbed Alex's shoulder.
"Alexander," he spoke, "I need you to come to my cabin and write another letter to Congress. We need more supplies for this plan to work."
Alex nodded softly and replied, "Yes sir." He turned to John and smiled before Washington spoke again, looking at John.
"Laurens, go ahead and relax for a second," Washington said, "I'll have a job for you later, but for now there is nothing needed."
A small feeling of disappointment washed over him as Washington told Alex to go help him write another letter. John nodded politely and tried not to react as his heart sank. "Sir," he said firmly in response before turning and walking away, spotting Lafayette in the distance with his soldiers.
Washington and Alex walked away as well, heading to the General's cabin. A feeling in Alex's stomach told him John was going to say something important, but he would have to wait until later to hear what it was.
