"Oh, just a book I checked out from the library," I replied nonchalantly.

Alastor raised an eyebrow and walked closer to me. "Can I see it?"

That's it. I'm screwed. He'll find out I have it. He'll be even more pissed at me now, or worse, I might not even be able to read it.

I reluctantly reached into my bag only to pull out...nothing.

"W-where'd it go??" I panicked, frantically searching.

I turned my bag upside down, my water bottle, wallet, and hellphone came out. But not the book.

"Did you take it??" I demanded. "You took it, didn't you? Fuck, I am just so stupid...!" I slapped my forehead.

Alastor stared at me defensively. "Y/N, I am offended!" He straightened his bow tie. "I'll have you know that I most certainly did not take it."

"Who else could've then? You wanted it, didn't you?"

Alastor stared at me in disapproval. "Aha! So you do have the book!"

I let out a huff in frustration. "Fine, yes I did. I grabbed it before you came into the library."

"I can't believe I fell for that..." he grumbled.

"Well never mind that. Neither of us are getting it at this point. It's gone," I said sorrowfully.

"Hmmm..." Alastor hummed, thinking.

"What?"

"What if we make a deal?" he suggested.

"A deal?" I eyed him suspiciously. "What exactly did you have in mind...?"

He smiled. "How about this; I help you find the book, in exchange for shared custody of it?"

"Custody?"

He nodded. "Precisely. You have it for a certain amount of time, I have it for the other portion of time and in return I help you find it. Or you can just carry the guilt of losing the only copy around this ring and amount to nothing." He smiled.

I stared at him. "What the hell?!"

The deer man shrugged. "Your choice," he said with a wolfish smile.

I stared at him in disbelief. "Ugh, fine, fine..." I groaned.

"Wonderful! Now, of course we'll have to work at dates and times of who gets to share what at what time, but besides that, we shan't waste anymore time. Let's go!" He tugged at my hand.

"Where exactly are we going?" I asked.

"My point exactly! We'd know if you didn't lose it," he informed me.

I scoffed. "Fuck you."

Alastor chuckled.

"Log; so uh...Alastor and I were looking around for a long time, searching for my—our book." I said into my phone mic. "We searched through the library, downtown, we asked around until finally, we gave up and headed back to the hotel. And to our unfortunate surprise...Charlie had it."

I heard Alastor laugh in the corner of the room. I turned my head over and gritted my teeth. "SHUT UP!" I called, turning off the mic.

Alastor wiped a tear from his eye. "Oh dear..." he chuckled. "How can I?"

"What a waste of time," I grumbled. "We spent all afternoon running around Hell only for Charlie to have kept it for safe keeping!"

"Hey! It was for the both of yours' better interest! I knew you'd tear each other apart for it," she protested. "At least now you guys have an arranged custody."

"It could've easily been avoided if it weren't for you..." I whispered under my breath.

Alastor laughed out loud. "Oh, I don't mind this outcome."

I glared at him. "Fuck you...of course you don't, radio clown."

"Easy there, princess..."

"See you and smiles are gettin' along, huh?" Angel interfered.

"I fucking hate him..." I grumbled, burying my face in my hand.

"I don't know, toots. He's starting to like ya, I can feel it."

I looked up at him. "Really?" I looked over at Alastor, who was looking more carefree and cheerful at the moment. Almost...happy. Truly happy. I'm not sure. It's hard to tell, since he's always smiling.

Now that I think about it...why does he keep smiling? I've never seen him frown.

"Do you think he has a choice?" I asked Angel.

"What do you mean? A choice for what?"

"Alastor. Do you think he chooses to always smile? Or do you think it's forced?"

Angel thought for a second. "I don't know — but it sure throws people off — I think that's his goal, though."

"Yeah, it sure as hell confuses me. Hard to tell what's going on underneath that hard exterior." I said, eyeing him as he sipped his whiskey.

"Who knows? Maybe nothing..."

I shuddered. "Creepy..."

"That he is, Y/N. He wears that smile like a fucking mask. No one knows what's underneath. Or...he's killed anyone who has."

"Below the surface..." I muttered, watching him intensively as he continued to smile.

Now that makes me wonder...

What is underneath?

A/N: Brief foremost; I apologize for not updating this book for a few days now, but updates will now be every Thursday.

It's been difficult juggling three books all at once while dealing with things irl, as well.

I have considered discontinuing this book, but after giving it some thought, I PROMISE IT WILL BE FINISHED.

I don't believe in deleting/discontinuing books, so you don't have to worry about that, either.

This book is also nearly finished, and will get better over time.

I thank you for your attention!
