Seven years doesn't feel like a long time when you've been in Hell for decades. But being undercover on a job with vague instructions for seven years with no idea on when my boss will return does feel like a long time.
I have my back leaning against the wall of the building that's across from the V's tower, back to my original form. My tail is swaying slightly as I take a deep breath. I need just a minute to collect my thoughts and plan out the rest of the day. Those thoughts are quickly interrupted by the 666 News interviewing the princess of Hell.
I turn around and watch the TV through the window of the store. A couple of others who were walking by have stopped to watch as well. However, this one small TV can't get crowded, or we won't be able to see. It sounds like she's talking about some hotel. The more I try to understand the more confused I feel. Is she trying to say that if people stay with her there's a chance sinners could get redeemed and go to Heaven? But there's no proof!
"What a stupid idea." I mutter and shake my head. What demon is going to want to be redeemed? We all know why we're here. I know where I fucked up and I've accepted that. I change my appearance to what the V's recognize and head back into the building.
Night comes soon enough. Luckily the only work I had to get done was to help Vox take meeting minutes for a business call. Velvette doesn't have any shows that require me, and I have the night off from Valentino. I walk the streets, heading back to the casino that used to belong to Husk. At least I can still rent out a room there.
"I don't know how much longer I can keep this up." I say quietly to myself before sighing. "Vox is proving to be handful." I look up at the pentagram in the sky, as if it's going to have an answer to my question.
"Alastor, when are you coming back?" I ask the night sky. How pathetic am I that I actually want him to return? Was this part of his plan to break me all along? Probably. Bastard.
I keep looking up at the night sky. Even though I don't move where I am looking, I'm now looking at a ceiling. What the fuck?
I look around and it's not a building I recognize. The walls are red and there are pictures up. It looks like I'm in a big lobby of some sorts. The more I look around, I realize I'm not alone.
The first person I notice is a small gray skinned girl with one eye and long beautiful silver hair. She looks upset but confused at the same time. She must be confused about me. I'm confused too!
Next is Angel Dust, who I recognize from working with Valentino. Though I can tell he doesn't recognize me in this form. I have to remember that detail, so I don't say anything stupid by accident and blow my cover.
Then there's the princess of Hell. What a coincidence that I just saw her on the news today and now she's standing right before me. She's taller than I thought she would be.
Finally...
"You..." I say barely loud enough for the room to hear, focusing on Alastor. "How long have you-"
"Ah, (y/n). So good to see you!" Alastor sure sounds chipper as he interrupts me. I feel like he's putting on a front for the people in the room. It's not my place to ruin it.
"So... what exactly is going on?" I ask. It's been a long time since I've seen him. I don't know what to say.
"Well, you see my dear. I've the perfect job for you here at this hotel." Alastor begins as he walks closer to me, twirling his staff. He puts a hand on my shoulder and motions to the room. "We need your help in recruiting to fill these empty rooms. I can't picture a better person for the job than you!" What exactly is going on here? So, did Alastor drag me along here? Is he forcing me to help with this stupid hotel project?
"Did you forget that you already-" I stop mid-sentence as I look up at him. The look he's giving me causes a chill down my spine. His grip on my shoulder has tightened to an uncomfortable level. It doesn't seem like the others in the room are noticing. Maybe I shouldn't talk about this out here.
"...had me doing this kind of work before? This will be easy!" I laugh. Hopefully that was a good enough save.
"Now that's the spirit!" Alastor removes his grip from my shoulder and pats my back before moving on. Seriously though, what's going on?
With the snap of Alastor's fingers, he's able to make another small demon appear from fire. He explains to the room that her name is Niffty and it seems like she really likes to clean. She zips around the room like lightning, getting rid of cobwebs and bugs like no problem. So, he must be cashing in a few favors and bringing them to the hotel.
Finally, I hear a voice I recognize.
"Ha! Read 'em and weep boys! Full – whoa! What the Hell? What the fuck is this?" Husk looks around confused. It looks like he was in the middle of a blackjack game. Finally, his eyes meet Alastor's. "You!" Yep, that's the expression I expected.
Husk doesn't seem very excited about this endeavor either. I don't blame him. Alastor seems to understand what motivates Husk though and easily materializes alcohol for the previous gambling overlord. Poor Husk seems to have sunk deeper into alcohol since the last time I saw him.
Though, it is a little entertaining watching Angel flirt with Husk and make him uncomfortable.
I don't think I'll be getting any answers from Alastor right now while he's in front of other people. I walk over to Husk, who coughs on his drink once he sees me. "(y/n)! It's been years!" He states.
"Yeah, I know. I've been doing a different job for him these past few years. Long story for another time, I suppose." I say as I take a seat at the bar. "So, bartender, what can you make me?" I tease, smirking at him.
Husk lets out a small chuckle, looks around, snaps his fingers and starts putting something together. He slides a vodka cranberry in front of me and holds up his bottle of cheap booze to me. "To surviving together in this shit hole." He recommends a toast.
"I'll cheers to that." I smile, clinking my glass against his and taking a drink. "Who knows what trouble he's getting us into." I mutter, looking back at Alastor as he seems to be playing nice with the princess and others.
"Just keep surviving." Husk says, making my attention focus back on him. "You've done it this long, and you've done a good job. Keep it up." He encourages. "You'll survive." He states.
"No. We'll survive, Husk." I clarify.
