"I am so excited for tonight," Flick said

"I am so excited for tonight," Flick said. "I can't believe we're finally attending our first Navy Gala together!"

Jake couldn't believe it either. He felt like this occasion should have come around sooner than it had, but somehow the dates and their availabilities had never lined up until now.

Flick squealed when Jake showed her the invite, and she squealed again (but louder) when Jake told her it would be a full dagger squad reunion, all partners accounted for too.

"I'll finally get to meet Reuban's hubby? And Phoenix's new girlfriend? Oh, and it will be so nice to see Briony again too, especially since she and Bob announced they're having another baby - she must be ready to pop! And Jacinda and I have so much to catch up on - don't groan, Jake, she chats more shit about Javy than I do about you."

She'd had her outfit picked out for weeks and teased him with tiny details of what it might look like for just as long. Not that he minded, however, because he knew he'd be in for a treat when the big reveal finally came. Flick never failed to take his breath away, and take his breath away she did.

"Wow. Just - wow."

Flick grinned and spun around, giving Jake even more of an eyeful of how the midnight black velvet hugged her curves in all the right places, the daringly high slit in the skirt revealing the perfect amount of thigh. The off-the-shoulder sweetheart neckline felt like an invitation to smother her shoulders in kisses, but he knew that if he started he would never be able to stop.

"The look on your face, baby. It's an absolute picture."

"Because I'm gazing at a masterpiece. The eighth wonder of the world."

"Oh stop it," Flick said, pressing her fingers to Jake's lips. He took the opportunity to kiss the back of her hand. "Besides, you look just as good, Lt Commander Seresin. Too good to be true, and don't act like you don't know it, modesty has never been your forte."

He had no choice but to acquiesce.

Flick sat down on the bed and reached for the shoebox under it.

"Help me with the finishing touch?"

There, under a blood-red bow, scarlet lid, and layers of crimson tissue paper, lay a pristine pair of jet-black stilettos. The pièce de résistance? A gleaming silver dagger adorned each heel.

"Felicity..."

Jake didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Flick leaned back and kicked up a leg, waggling her pedicured toes in his direction. He took the shoes and dutifully knelt at her feet, helping her slip on each heel, the Prince Charming to her Cinderella. He even noticed the sweet floral notes of her signature perfume that she had spritzed on her ankles, just for him.

Once finished, Jake held out his hand to help her stand and pulled her in for a chaste but loving kiss, knowing she wouldn't take kindly to him messing up her make-up.
