With a final farewell, we exchanged one last lingering glance before parting ways, each of us heading off into the night with a renewed sense of connection and possibility. And as I watched Zac disappear into the darkness, a sense of comfort washed over me, knowing that he would reach out when he arrived home safely.
The girls and I piled into my car, the lingering excitement of the night still buzzing in the air. Danni and Andi were already animated, rehashing the events of the evening with laughter and exaggerated gestures. I couldn't help but smile at their energy.
"Let's just sleep at my place," I suggested as I started the car. "It's late, and we're all exhausted."
"Sounds good to me," Danni agreed, stretching out in the back seat. "I could use a comfy bed."
The drive to my apartment was filled with light-hearted chatter, the tension of the earlier events fading away. As we pulled into my driveway, I felt a wave of relief. Home, even temporarily shared with friends, was a sanctuary.
Once inside, we settled into the living room, where the girls quickly made themselves comfortable. I took out my phone and sent a quick text to Zac:
"Hey Zac, we just got to my place. Everyone's safe and sound. :) Hope you made it home okay too."
Almost immediately, my phone buzzed with his reply:
"Glad to hear that! I'm home too. It was really nice talking to you tonight, Fatima."
I couldn't help but smile at his message. There was something about Zac that felt different—genuine and comforting. We exchanged a few more texts, the conversation flowing easily as if we had known each other for years.
"You really know how to brighten someone's night," Zac wrote.
"I'm just glad I could help. Tonight was...intense."
"Yeah, but you made it better. I hope I didn't come off too strong."
"Not at all. I appreciated your honesty. It's refreshing."
"So, what are you doing now?"
"Just got the girls settled. Thinking about a shower and then bed."
Sitting my phone down, I told Alexa to play my Shower playlist and just started listening to the soft tunes as they played. Keeping my shower no longer than 30 minutes I decided to get out. Then I heard a notification come through to my phone.
**"Mind if I FaceTime you? Would love to see that gorgeous face of yours before I go to sleep."
Caught off guard, I glanced at my reflection in the mirror. I had just stepped out of the shower, my hair wrapped in a towel. Despite my initial hesitation, I decided to answer. After all, it was just Zac.
"Hey," I greeted, holding the phone up as I sat on the edge of my bed.
"Wassup Beautiful," Zac replied, a playful smile tugging at his lips. "You look...refreshed."
I laughed, adjusting the towel around my hair. "Just finished showering. Hope you don't mind."
"Not at all," he said, his gaze softening. "I wanted to see you. I was thinking about our conversation."
"Me too," I admitted, feeling a blush creep up my cheeks. "You know, you have a way of making a girl feel special."
"And you have a way of making a guy want to get to know you more," he flirted back, his tone warm and genuine.
We continued talking, the conversation shifting between playful banter and deeper topics. Zac's charm and sincerity made it easy to open up.
"So, what do you like to do for fun, Fatima?" he asked, leaning back against his headboard.
