(Ishan's dialogues will be in italics.
Shubman's dialogues will be in bold.)Ishan's pov
"I don't think I'll be at your wedding."
"What?"
"I hope you understand."
"Why?"
"Don't you know the reason already? I can't be at your wedding. I just can't."
He looked at me sadly.
"But you're my bestfriend-"
"Maybe I don't want to be your bestfriend."
Shubman nodded. He knew. He understood. It would be impossible not to. We had both felt it. I knew he didn't love Tanya, but I was sure as hell not going to tell him that. He was aware of it himself, but if he still wanted to go through with it, I wasn't going to stop him.
"What will you tell the others?"
"I won't. You will. I'll be gone. You will be the one they'll question."
"The wedding is in ten days...just letting you know.""When was that decided?"
"Just some time ago. You were the first person I came to tell."
I nodded and Shubman just looked at me for a while, before leaving.
I packed my bags, because Abhi was supposed to be leaving to go to his parents house today and I wanted to go with him to meet my family aswell. When he got up, he looked at me with confusion.
"What are you doing?""Coming with you."
"Miss your parents?"
"Yeah but I'm coming with you to Canada aswell."
"Wait- I thought you said you couldn't miss his wedding?"
"But I also can't attend it."
He nodded knowingly.
"He didn't try to hard to stop me either."
"He knows."
I nodded and we got dressed and left for Bihar."They're getting married in Mumbai itself?"
"Yeah. I could just stay in Bihar-"
"But if you were in Bihar, you would be expected to go to the wedding, even by your own family."
"Exactly."
The both of us spend a few days in Bihar and we left for Canada when there were about five days left to his wedding.I tried to busy myself and not think about it and I thought it would be easier since I was in Canada, but distance really didn't help.
"Hey! Snap out of it."
"I'm sorry, I can't help it."
He sighed. Abhi and I just sat there. We were at the Niagara falls but I had obviously zoned out.
"I wish we could've just married each other."
"Too bad, I'm straight.""Plus you're not my type."
"Please! I'm everyone's type."
"Not mine."
We started arguing and he managed to lighten up my mood.
I received a call from Shubman, a day before his wedding, but I didn't pick up. I really didn't want to interact with him, especially a day before his wedding. I ignored a few calls from my other teammates aswell, which I assumed were probably to ask me why I wasn't present at the wedding.Shubman's wedding was on the 19th and he was going on his honeymoon the next day, itself. I had booked myself a ticket of the 23rd, to not arise suspicions on why I had come right after Shubman's wedding. When I reached our hotel in Mumbai though, the first person I saw was Virat bhai and he looked at me with disbelief.
"What's wrong?"
"What the fucks wrong? Shub needed you and you weren't here."Virat bhai said in a disappointed tone and I got worried. My brain came up with the worst possible scenarios but before I could ask him to further elaborate, Shubman showed up.
"It's not his fault bhaiya."
I gave him a once over and observed that he wasn't injured or hurt and sighed in relief.
"Can we talk?"
I just nodded and followed him to his room."What was that all about?"
"I didn't get married."
I stared at him blankly for a while before my brain actually registered what he said.
"Wait- what?"
"I just wanted to tell you that I really love-"
"Wait. What happened?"
"She called it off a day before the wedding.""That's terrible!"
"No, it's not. She said it was because she felt I was in love with someone else...and she's right. I love yo-"
"Why did you say yes to her in the first place?"
"My parents wanted me to."
"Didn't matter what you wanted?"
"It does-"
"And yet you didn't once try to tell your parents that?"
"I'm sorry.""You're sorry..? You're sorry!? You kept trying to tell me that you loved me right now, but you know what, you're a coward. You didn't have the guts to tell your parents that you didn't want to marry Tanya and you didn't have the guts to face the fact that you were in love with me. And SHE was the one who broke off the marriage. If she hadn't done so you would've been on your honeymoon right now-"
"No-"
"I'M NOT DONE YET! This is what you call love..? What are you so afraid of huh? I was willing to risk my career, my everything for you and you couldn't even deny your parents and the worst part is the girl had to do it for you! If you actually loved me, we wouldn't be here having this conversation. If you actually loved me, you wouldn't have even gotten engaged in the first place. So don't tell me you love me now that you got rejected by the girl."Both Shubman and I had tears flowing down our faces at that point and we just stood there for a while. He tried to take a step closer to me but I raised my palm stopping him.
"Don't. I don't deserve any of this."
"I-"
"I was going to ask you out the day you came to me saying you got engaged. Back then I dismissed it. I didn't get mad because I thought it wouldn't have worked out between us anyways."He looked at me, surprised.
"I thought that you picked the easier option and I couldn't blame you for it. Especially given our careers, we could lose everything. Heck, sometimes I even thought that I had misread the situation and that you didn't actually like me, but
we kissed Shubman. Three times. That's not what friends do."
"We are not friends-"
"Yes. We aren't friends anymore either."
I walked out.________________________________________
