The girls had spent the last two weeks kissing as often as possible. Whenever they were alone – even for just a second – their lips would find one another. It was becoming a serious issue, because Tara found herself daydreaming about exploring every inch of the taller girl's body with her mouth. It was quickly escalating, too. Their make out sessions were getting more and more intense – more desperate.
At that point, all of their friends knew they were very much into each other. In her defense, it hadn't been Mindy who announced it to everyone. It had been Wes, who – slack jawed and disappointed – gasped and drew attention to Amber's hand on Tara's thigh, where she had been inching closer to her center.
"What the fuck you guys? Are you two hooking up?" he shrieked.
Amber rolled her eyes. "Can it, Hicks. You never had a shot anyway." She looked over to the smaller girl and smiled, pretty much confirming what they had all suspected.
It was a Friday night in September when they took the next step. They had started taking their movie marathons to Amber's room, just in case her maid walked in on them in the living room. They had decided on The Babadook, one of Tara's absolute favorites. Amber wasn't a huge fan of the movie but pretended to be interested anyway, because she knew how important it was to Tara. They didn't get very much watching done.
They were in bed, cuddling as they often did, when the smaller girl felt her heart swelling with happiness. She felt secure and loved, and had she not known the outcome, she probably would have let her guard down entirely. Had she not been told by whatever powers that be that the girl beside her would one day carve into her flesh, she never would have believed it.
She pushed the inevitable out of her brain, as she found herself doing more and more over the two weeks they had grown closer. Two weeks – that's all that was left to change things. She had to make it count.
As Amber kept her eyes on the movie, Tara cuddled up to her, in desperate need of something she couldn't quite explain. She watched the taller girl's profile, memorizing the curves of her face until she could close her eyes and retrace them. It wasn't until Amber tried to steal a glance of the smaller girl that she grew bold enough to slowly go for a kiss. It wasn't their usual desperate, fevered kiss. No, this was something else. She took her time studying the taste of the girl's lips, committing their movements to memory. Amber sighed happily into her mouth, surprised by the gentleness but not complaining.
When they pulled apart, Tara breathed, "I want you."
"You have me," she replied, just as quietly but sincerely.
"No, Amber." She kissed her again, deepening the kiss while her hands roamed the taller girl's body, settling on her chest. "I want you."
Amber's body tensed up, her breath catching in her throat. "Are you sure?" Her eyebrows were knitted together in such concern and patience, that Tara decided she might jump her bones right then and there if she wasn't careful.
"Yes."
Their lips met again, shyly this time, like the first time they had kissed. It was gentle but filled with a need – a hunger. It was Amber would pulled away this time. Her breathing was erratic, like she was trying too hard to control it.
"Can I – is it okay if I take this off?" she asked as her hands tugged lightly on the bottom of her shirt. Tara could feel her fingertips brushing across the skin of her abdomen, and it was driving her crack.
"Please."
The taller girl sat her up and carefully helped her out of her shirt. Setting it aside, she licked her lips and raked her eyes over the girl's body. "You're so beautiful, Tara," she whispered as their lips met again.
