Asexual (Ace) -
Experiencing little to no sexual attraction to others, and may or may not feel romantic attraction.
This flag was designed by AVEN user "standup" in 2010, during a month-long competition - Asexuality visibility and education network;
Black: Asexuality
Gray: Gray-Asexuality and Demisexuality
White: Non-asexual Partners and Allies
Purple: Community
In 1869, when Hungarian doctor; Karl-Maria Kertbeny, anonymously created pamphlets, against a sodomy law in Germany. He mentioned Monosexuality. Monosexuality was referred to as people who only masturbate; "sexual satisfaction only with themselves". Asexuality was first defined by German sexual reformist; Emma Trosse in 1897. Stated in her work "Ein Weib? Psychologisch-biographische: Studie über eine Konträrsexuelle", she mentioned that Asexuality, as well as same-sex attraction were not exceptions or abnormal, therefore the state shall protect their rights to sexual freedom.
(The word Asexual combines the prefix A-, which means "not" or "without", and sexual, which means sex. Asexual was also first used in biology to refer to organisms that have no sex organs.)Aromantic (Aro) -
Experiencing little or no romantic attraction to others, and may or may not feel sexual attraction.
This flag was designed by Cameron Whimsy in 2014;
Dark Green: Lack of Romance
Light Green: Aromanticism as a Spectrum
White: Platonic, Aesthetic, and Queerplatonic relationships. Gray: Demiromantic people
Black: Sexuality spectrum
Aromantic was first coined in an Asexuality Visibility and Education Network discussion thread titled "Relationship Definitions" in 2005.
(The term comes from the prefix A-, which means "not" or "without", and romantic, which means "relating to romance".)Aromantic Asexual (AroAce) -
Experiencing little to no sexual or romantic attraction, although this does not mean never getting into romantic relationships or having sex.
This flag was designed by Tumblr user "aroaceflags" in December, 2018;
Warm Orange: Embraces Community and Belonging among AroAce individuals
Sun-Kissed Yellow: Diverse forms of Love beyond Traditional Romantic and Sexual Relationships
White: Wholeness and Completeness, Independent of Romantic and Sexual Attraction
Light Azure Blue: Vast Spectrum of AroAce Identities
Deep Ocean Blue: Depth and Complexity of the AroAce Experience
This can be traced back to the broader asexual and aromantic communities, which emerged in the early 2000s as a way for individuals to explore and understand their experiences of omitted or absent romantic and sexual attraction.
(The term AroAce comes from both Aro, the shortened term for Aromantic, and Ace, shortened term for Asexual, which is combined into one word.)Abrosexual or Abroromantic (Abro) -
Sexuality (or Romanticity) is fluid and fluctuates between different sexualities. This can include changes in both sexual and romantic orientation.
The flag is thought to be designed by an unknown DeviantArt user in 2013;
The meaning behind the flag's colors is unknown, but people have speculated that
Green: Queer Attraction,
Light Green & White: In-between stage of Attraction shifting
Light Pink & Pink: Actual shift itself.
Furthermore, the colors match that of a watermelon, which could be a fun pun on the fluidity of the orientation.
The term was also thought to be coined by the same unknown DeviantArt user in 2013 as well, though it gained traction on Tumblr in 2016.
(The term derives from the Greek root Abro, which means "delicate" or "graceful", and symbolizes the movement and changing nature of people who are Abrosexual.)Agender -
A person who has an internal sense of being neither male nor female nor some combination of male and female: of, relating to, or being a person whose gender identity is genderless or neutral.
This flag was designed by Salem X, aka "Ska" or on Tumblr "transrants" on February 18, 2014;
Black & White: Absence of Gender
Gray: Semi-Genderlessness
Green: Non-Binary Genders
The term was first documented on UseNet, in the chat room "alt.messianic", when a user posted "God is amorphous, agender, (...) so image can't be a physical or gender or sexual thing.", in 2000. This was then used again on UseNet by 2005, and gained popularity by 2013.
(The word comes from the prefix A-, which means "not" or "without", combined with gender, so that Agender refers to someone who is genderless, or without gender expression.)Androgynous/Androgyny/Androgyne -
The state of being neither specifically feminine or masculine, or the combination of feminine and masculine characteristics
This flag was designed by Tumblr user "saveferris", on July 24, 2014;
Pink: Femininity
Purple: Combination of Femininity and Masculinity
Blue: Masculinity
This construct was first formulated and introduced by gender scholar, Sandra Bem, in the early 1970s. This introduction challenged the long held notion in the wider society and in the field of psychology that masculinity and femininity constitute bipolar ends of a singular continuum.
This flag was designed by Tumblr user "saveferris", on July 24, 2014.
(The term "Androgyne" comes from the Greek andrógunos; a compound formed from the term anér/andrós, (man), and guné/gunaikós, (woman); an androgyne is thus a being of both genders.)
