"So, how'd your conversation go with Hongjoong the other day?" Yoongi asked, holding his books close to his chest as they walked together down the university halls.
"I'm struggling." Jungkook sighed.
"Struggling? Why?"
"Because he's being nice to me and I can't handle that."
"You're a weak soul."
"Shut up, I'm not." He mumbled, even though he knew it was true. The more he gets along with Hongjoong, the more his feelings grow.
"What if you just told him how you felt?"
"I can't for multiple reasons."
"Which are?"
"Seonghwa is a start."
"Park Seonghwa? What about him?"
"They're attached at the hip. Hongjoong really likes him."
"Has he told you that?"
"Of course not, but I just know."
"What's the other reason besides Seonghwa?"
"Hongjoong already has his mind made up. We can be civil, but nothing will ever happen between us because I've done so much damage."
Yoongi groaned and rolled his eyes. "I have an idea. It's really, really fucked up. But there's a chance it could work if you beat Seonghwa to it."
"What?" Jungkook was willing to listen to anything.
"The party on Saturday. Tell Hongjoong to come."
"He'll be more careful this time."
"No." Yoongi shook his head. "Just hear me out."
"Okay, I'm listening."
"We can talk to Jimin and see if he's down. He was just the first person that came to mind."
"Get on with it already."
"Have Jimin flirt with Hongjoong."
"I don't know if I can handle that. Seonghwa is bad enough."
"No, just shut up and listen. Jimin will just play along with the plan. If Hongjoong looks uncomfortable, swoop in and play hero."
"What if Hongjoong doesn't get uncomfortable?"
"He will be if we tell Jimin to say some really out of pocket shit."
"Like what?"
"I don't know." Yoongi shrugged. "Nothing creepy. I trust Jimin."
"Do you think he'd be down to do it?"
"With a couple drinks in him, absolutely."
With a plan now in the works, Jungkook played hundreds of scenarios in his head. He was desperate to redeem himself in Hongjoong's eyes.
The first thing he wanted to do was tell his roommate about the party over the weekend, but when he walked into the dorm, he thought it would be best to stay quiet. Hongjoong was sitting on his bed with scattered papers covering every inch.
Jungkook didn't want to get called out for staring so he made sure to remember the focused expression he only got to glance at. He loved the way Hongjoong would furrow his eyebrows and pout his lips when he was deep in thought.
"Hongjoong?"
"Hmm?" The scholar didn't look up from his notes as he continued to scribble on the paper in front of him.
"Have you eaten yet today?"
"Can't go anywhere, don't have time."
"That's what I figured. I was just wondering if you'd want me to order you anything. I'm about to for myself, so I just thought I'd ask."
"I don't have money to spend right now."
"I'll pay for it, don't worry."
Hongjoong lifted his head and looked to Jungkook, now interested in the offer.
"What are you getting?"
"I haven't figured that out yet. But I can get anything you want and I can just order from there."
"Okay." Hongjoong mumbled, suddenly feeling shy. He was beginning to realize he wasn't used to Jungkook's kindness either.
"By the way," the older roommate spoke up as he ordered their food on his phone, "there's another party this weekend if you're not busy."
"Same place?"
"Yeah."
"I'll think about it. I just have a lot of homework."
"Is there anything I could help with?"
Hongjoong's eyes widened. Once again surprised by Jungkook's comments, he refrained from saying something degrading and shook his head.
"It's all honors stuff."
"Are you one of those that's naturally super smart or do you have to study a ton to understand it?"
Hongjoong sighed. "I wish I was naturally super smart, otherwise I wouldn't work my ass off every day."
Jungkook was surprised by his response. He figured that Hongjoong was just an overachiever. He was beginning to further understand why his roommate was so uptight at all times.
"Is there a reason you drive yourself crazy with studying?"
"Because I want a good grade?" Hongjoong thought it was a stupid question, but again tried to refrain from insulting him. "Oh, I see." He started to smile. "You're trying to be nosy."
"What? No, I'm not." Jungkook panicked. "I was just curious."
"Then to satisfy your curiosity, there's a reason."
"Parents?"
"Yup, my dad. He never thought I'd amount to much so this is me trying to prove him wrong. Pathetic, I know."
"No, I respect you a lot for that."
"Really? Why?"
"Because you could've just given up."
Hongjoong felt understood by his roommate for once. Once he realized he was blushing, he dropped his head down and went back to work. He was hoping Jungkook wouldn't notice.
The last thing he wanted was to give him some hope.
