THE EYRE HOUSE SAT ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, secluded away from the rest of Beacon Hills. The backyard led into the forest, fenced in to conceal the tiled pool and Eyre's deepest secret.

Stefan Eyre was sound asleep in his bed with an empty mug of tea on his bedside table and an open book about Alen Menken's discography in his lap. In the bedroom across the hall, where should have been a teenage girl getting a good night's sleep before their first day of school the next morning was a blanket covering a pillow.

But Stefan Eyre wouldn't learn of that until the next morning. He had gone to bed as Callista was going to shower after a late-night swim in the pool. When Callista was brushing her now chlorine-free hair, her partner-in-crime messaged her that there was a crime and he needed his partner. Callista was never one to skip out on a secret investigation – she and Stiles had gotten caught a dozen too many times – so in a white flannel pajama set with pink hearts on them, she snuck out of the house and met at their agreed upon location: the McCall house.

So there the two best friends were, lying on the front porch roof for their third accomplice to emerge. As Stiles was adjusting his balance, his foot slipped and he almost toppled off the ledge. He would have if Callista hadn't grabbed his shoulder and yanked him back at the last second.

They heard the sound of the front door opening, and they took their cue and threw their heads over the ledge. They expected to see Scott with a matching excited grin, not a wooden baseball bat.

"Ah!"

"Ah!"

"Ah!"

Callista's fear caused her to loosen her grip on Stiles, and he slipped further down, his waist now hanging off the roof. Luckily, she grabbed his jacket and kept him from falling completely off and crashing to the floor at the last second.

"Stiles, you're heavy!" Callista whined with a huff, her minimal arm muscles straining from supporting his weight.

Stiles was more focused on the weapon that almost smacked him in the face. "Why do you have a bat?" He balked, glaring at Scott for almost attacking him.

"I thought you were a predator," Scott replied sheepishly. Callista giggled at that, finding the prospect of Stiles being a menacing beast laughable.

"A pred..." Stiles was just as dumbfounded. "Ok, but look, I know it's late, but you have got to hear this. Dispatch called. They're bringing every officer from the Beacon Department, even the state police."

"For what?" Scott asked, wondering what would be the cause of such a dramatic reaction.

"Two joggers found a body in the woods," Callista answered, Stiles having filled her in as they climbed onto the porch roof.
