Kira mindlessly pulled up in front of the house she was called to; another set of victims that matched her case. She was alone today as Carmen had decided to take a personal day.
She felt her phone buzzing as she started walking up the driveway of the house. She pulled the device out of her pocket and stopped in her tracks as she saw the Caller ID.
Mom
The contact photo that filled the screen as her phone buzzed was old; it was taken when Kira was just thirteen, before her life took a turn downhill.
Kira didn't have the worst relationship with her mother, but it wasn't the best. Truth be told, she couldn't even remember the last time she spoke with the woman
Before she could make the decision to answer or ignore the call, she heard multiple bangs behind her. Placing her hand over her gun that still rested in her holster, she turned around, her whole body relaxing when she sees what was causing the commotion. Once she comprehends the commotion, she gets angry again.
"Hey!" she shouted, running towards the fire truck that was driving into her police car so it would move. "What's the matter with you!"
She stood in shock as the firefighters jumped out of the engine. Her left eye twitched as she marched over to the drivers side, fighting the urge to roll her eyes at the man who was behind the wheel. He crossed his arms and leaned against the truck when she approached him, a cocky smirk resting on his lips. Kira was almost certain that smirk was permanently etched on his face; she hated it.
They hadn't talked since the incident at the bar; they hadn't even seen each other since then. Kira did regret what she said to him, but she didn't think she was mature enough to apologize to the man in front of her for anything.
"What the hell was that?"
"I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about."
Kira resisted the urge to smack him. "You know exactly what I'm talking about, Buckley."
"I don't know what to tell ya," he shrugged, smirking down at her. "Maybe this'll be a teaching moment."
Kira scoffed as he leaned off the truck and started following his team inside the house to tend to the victim. "Teaching moments? You don't teach me anything.
"First for everything, princess," he says, slight disdain in his voice as the pet name falls off his tongue. He nodded his head behind her. "Don't park in front of my hydrant again, Brennan."
He didn't wait for a response, but just walked into the house at last.
Kira took a deep breath and turned around. Sure enough, she had been parked in front of a fire hydrant.
"Jesus," she grumbled under her breath. It was only nine in the morning, and of this wasn't a wake up call, she wasn't sure what was.
Kira met everyone else where the crime had occurred; just like the other scene she'd been on with Camren there was an older man, dead, and the most recent development, there was a young girl, left alive.
"How is she?" Kira softly asked Hen.
"She's alive, no major wounds," the older woman answered. "I wouldn't try poking answers out of her yet, though. She's not speaking to us, just nodding and shaking her head. Poor thing."
