Summer. The time between June and August when I can be my true self and spend time with my favorite people in my favorite house.
I've been going to Cousins beach with the Fishers and the Conklins since I was a baby. My mom spent every summer there with her best friends.
That was until she passed away. My mother was killed in a car crash by a drunk driver on her way home from work one day. That was three years ago, and I haven't been to Cousins since.
The Conklins offered to pick me up from my aunts house on their way, and I was beyond ecstatic to hear their offer.
I spent the whole night before packing my bags with everything I needed, and maybe a little extra.
I was now standing on the curb in front of my home, waiting for the Conklins to arrive. It was early in the morning, the air was warm but the wind caused goosebumps to rise on my skin.
I heard the horn of a car, causing my eyes to shoot towards the noise. Steven was driving, belly in the passenger seat, and Laurel in the back. I waved at them, smiling, before climbing into the car.
"Vegas, how was your school year?" Laurel asked as I buckled my seat belt.
"It was good, junior prom was amazing."
She smiled at me, "Your dress was gorgeous." Belly turned around, saying to me. "I found one similar to it, it's purple and absolutely amazing."
"And absolutely out of our budget." Laurel added.
"I bet it's as beautiful as you are Conklin. The glow up you had is just incredible."
I smiled at her, "We haven't seen you in three years! Your glow up is incredible x2!" Belly giggled, Laurel and I laughed.
Steven sighed, turning off of my street and heading towards the highway. "Stevie, I almost forgot about you!" I joked.
"Haha, very funny. I can see your humor still sucks after these past few years."
I jokingly frowned at him, staring at him through the rear view mirror. Steven laughed, tapping his hands on the steering wheel.
Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift started playing on the radio, causing Belly to turn the volume up. I smiled, singing along with my friend to my favorite song.

Nearly an hour later we were pulling into a gas station. We had just arrived in Cousins and we were only a few miles away from the Fisher's Summer House.
Laurel insisted on stopping for snacks and to use the bathroom, quoting that she would "explode" if she didn't.
Belly and I walked inside, grabbing a few snacks before heading to the register. I chose sour strips and nerd gummy clusters while Belly chose sour patch kids. I grabbed a second pack of sour strips, praying that they were still Jeremiah's favorite candy.
