"When I call your name, you will come up to the stool and put on the hat. On your head," she added that last bit, Susan knew, because one of the Weasley twins in her year had tried to put the Sorting Hat on... a place she'd rather not think about. "That will determine which house you are in. Abbott, Hannah."
And so it began. Susan was anxious again. She wondered which house Edmund would be put in. She knew it definitely wouldn't be Ravenclaw, with her, because he had never been very clever. She doubted very much Hufflepuff, so it was either Gryffindor out Slytherin. She could definitely imagine him being in Slytherin, because he wasn't the nicest person in the world. Gryffindor... not so much.
"Malfoy, Draco." Susan saw the blond boy Edmund had been talking to on the train walk up and smirk, before the Hat was put on his head and it shouted,
"SLYTHERIN!"
That was not a good sign. If Edmund's friend was in Slytherin, there was a good chance that he would be too. Now she was even more worried.
Soon- too soon- it was Edmund's turn. She watched intently as he slowly walked up, and the hat was placed on his head. Almost immediately, the Hat shouted, "SLYTHERIN!". Cringing, Susan lightly clapped. She wondered, for a second, if it would be alright, and he wouldn't be changed by his house. Then she saw him and the Malfoy boy smirk and she knew it was hopeless.
She was suddenly distracted by another name she recognised.
"Potter, Harry."
Many gasps filled the Hall at that. Harry Potter. The Boy-Who-Lived. At Hogwarts. While she was. This was amazing. This was great. This was- just wow. And he was in Edmund's year.
Edmund.
Edmund, her brother, who was now in danger of making friends with the wrong kind of people. The people who would lead him away.
She caught Peter's eye at the Gryffindor table and gave him a worried look. He just rolled his eyes and mouthed three words to her she hoped were true.
"He'll be fine."
