Walking down the winding, bustling road of Diagon Alley, Hermione observed the crowd with keen eyes. Shops lined both sides of the street, their vibrant displays enticing witches and wizards of all ages. Among the throng, her gaze settled on a certain blonde-haired man with his son. The man, with an air of impatience, seemed to be practically dragging the younger boy away from Quality Quidditch Supplies, much to Hermione's amusement.
She smirked and decided to follow them, making sure her footsteps were silent as she closed the gap between them. Her heart pounded with anticipation, but her plan was thwarted when she tripped on a loose cobblestone. She fell to her knees with a sharp hiss of pain, drawing the attention of the men ahead.
"Fuck!" she whispered to herself, slowly looking up to meet cold grey eyes that were both furious and curious.
Lucius Malfoy kept his gaze fixed on her, his aristocratic features twisted in a sneer, waiting for her to explain herself. His son, Draco, stood beside him, mirroring his father's disdainful expression.
Flustered and dirty, Hermione brushed off her robes more than necessary, feeling the sting of embarrassment. She straightened up, summoning her courage, and spoke in a timid yet clear voice. "Mr. Malfoy, I... wanted to speak with you. I was hoping it would be away from listening ears and watching eyes, but I..."
Smirking at her discomfort, Lucius interrupted, "Whatever do you want, girl? Can't you see I am busy?" He gestured at Draco, who was standing near a turnoff point leading to the shadowy entrance of Knockturn Alley. "So speak! And do it properly! I don't want to be seen with the likes of you... filthy blood," he muttered the last bit under his breath, but loud enough for Hermione to hear. Draco chuckled, his eyes gleaming with malice.
"Okay... um... I—" A glare from Lucius was enough for her to straighten her back and speak with more confidence. "I want to be a Death Eater," she proclaimed.
Lucius' eyes widened, and he glanced around frantically to ensure no one had overheard her. Grabbing her arm with a bruising grip, he dragged her with brute force into the dark, narrow entrance of Knockturn Alley.
Upon letting her go, he wiped his hands clean, his face contorting in disgust. The alley was dimly lit, the air thick with the smell of decay and dark magic. Hermione opened her mouth to speak but was cut off before she could even start.
"You idiot girl, you can't go around saying things like that in public! You're a regrettably smart girl; you should know that of all people!" Lucius exclaimed in a hushed shout, casting a wary glance back at Diagon Alley, which was still bathed in sunlight.
Taking his silence as an invitation to continue, Hermione said, "I want to be a Death Eater to—" but she was cut off again, this time by Draco, his face emerging from the shadows with a scowl.
"Go away, Mudblood. Stop lying!"
Ignoring Draco's comment, Hermione pressed on, her voice steady. She recounted everything that had happened in the past day, her eyes welling with tears. She brushed them away angrily and stared Lucius straight in the face, her eyes pleading.
"While I admire your thirst for revenge, you're a Mudblood... The Dark Lord wouldn't take your filth..."
Hermione's resolve hardened as she continued, detailing how she could aid their cause. She revealed she had information on the Order and knew the identity of the traitor among them, someone who was divulging all their secrets and plans to Dumbledore. To her surprise, Draco spoke up, this time in her favor.
"Father, she would be a great help, and she would know a lot of information that we can't get hold of, especially if what she says about a double-crossing spy is true."
Without acknowledging his son's words, Lucius grabbed Hermione harshly by her arm and Apparated away, leaving the dark alley and its secrets behind.
