WE THREE ARE ONE. ALWAYS AND FOREVER.
990 AD.
Eight year old Niklaus hid behind the tree from his father once again terrified of his father's anger over something he had done. He heard giggling and looked into the woods seeing the golden hair of his little sister five year old Rebekah crouched down and the darker golden streaked head of six year old Kol giggling and whispering together.
Niklaus walked towards them silently, something he had always been able to do, his footsteps silent and sure as he walked across the leaf and twig strewn floor of the woods surrounding their village. Few could catch him at it, even his father.
He came close and watched his young siblings. He thought of them as twins born only ten months apart. He remembered Kol being born and a baby then his Mother's stomach was large again in it seemed no time and the golden haired blue eyed baby had been born. Rebekah had looked like him with her fair hair and blue eyes. He had loved her instantly. Kol had cried a lot as a baby and Niklaus had avoided him until Rebekah was born. Mother had made a larger cradle and put Kol and Rebekah in there together.
The moment Rebekah had lain near Kol, he had stopped crying and because Niklaus adored Rebekah he often watched the two babies in the cradle together holding hands and gurgling to each other, like they understood each other and had a secret language. His fondness and love for Kol grew from then.
Feeling left out, Niklaus was younger than Elijah by four years and younger than Finn by six years, his big brothers always helping their father with more grown up work, his big brothers often away from their hut during the day. Niklaus became the watcher of the babies and grew to love Kol because his adored baby sister seemed to. He would watch the two of them sleep for hours unless his mother called for him to help her.
He watched Rebekah and Kol babble to each holding hands and looked up from the cradle when he felt a hand on his shoulder to see his mother behind him.
"Is it their magic that draws you to your young siblings, Niklaus?" She asked softly.
"Are they witches like you mother?" Niklaus questioned.
"They are," Esther crouched down next to him near the cradle, "Do not tell your father or brothers they are unaware of Kol and Rebekah's magic and your father would not like knowing his children have magic this young, he understands magic in older people but not in babes." Niklaus nodded innocently at her request.
"I will never tell them mother, not even Elijah," He promised.
"Good boy Niklaus," Esther smiled and walked away. If only she had the compassion of a selfless mother to know lies and deceit can rot the souls of the innocent.
