"Maeve are you ok?" My mother's soft voice drifted through the door. I felt sick to my stomach. A new school, a new house, new people. It made me feel sick.
Over the past 7 years my family has moved from place to place.
Until I was 5 I lived in Dublin.
At 6 we moved to Manchester.
At 7 we moved to Athens.
At 8, San Francisco.
And at 9, New York.
When I was 10 we moved back to Dublin and now, at 13 I lived in Cork.
Da had promised to me and my brother that this would be the last move. I didn't know if that was entirely the truth. He said that about New York and Dublin too.
"Yeh all good Mam" I tried to say in the most enthusiastic voice I could. Mam was silent for a few seconds."Can I come in?" She questioned.
Mam always saw right through me, she says it's because I'm a minnie her. When I cracked the door open Mam crept in. Slowly lowering herself onto the cold tiles next to me she took me in her arms. I think she could feel the anxiousness radiating off of me."It will be ok eve. It's always ok." She coaxed.
I sunk deeper into her chest. In this world my mother was the only person I knew I could truly trust. She always knew exactly what to say and when to say it. Mam always knew how I was feeling.
"But what if it's the same, what if they hate me there too." Tears started to fill my eyes. Mam shook her head.
"It's different this time, I can feel it"
"I love you" I whispered.
"I love you to my sweet darling" placing other kiss on my forehead she slowly lifted us both to our feet.
"It's all going to be okay. Just try and make at least one friend." A gorgeous white smile spread across my mother's face.
"I'll try" I promised.
Maybe this school could be different?
