"I just need you to go through it one more time, Reynolds." The officer in front of Lexi has a stern expression, pen and pad in hand as he stares down at her. "Did you see anyone around? Any suspicious cars on the street?" His tone makes the girl bristle, a frown on her face."No, but I don't make a habit of memorizing my neighbors vehicles." Her words are biting, and she tucks her hands between her thighs to hide their shaking. Her body has been wracked with shivers since she found... Missy. Every-time her eyes shut she sees her bloody, mangled body.
"Alexis, can you please cooperate?" The office sighs long and hard, dropping his notepad.
"Rick, can you stop being such an ass?" Her eyes narrow on her most recent Ex, eyebrow raised. His jaw clenches, foot tapping against the pavement while Lexi leans back on the bumper of her dad's truck.
"Listen, you're dads on his way you can answer his questions if you want." Rick shoves his notepad in his pocket, turning to leave just as her hand shoots out to grab his elbow.
"Wait- no." Lexi bites her lip hard enough to draw blood. "I didn't see any strange cars, not even a footprint in our flowerbed. And no, there were no new people in the diner." Rick turns, eyes flashing to her hand on his arm.
"Honestly, I knew there wouldn't be- I guess I was just hoping you'd have seen something." Ricks eyes are softer now when they turn to her, and Lexi drops her hand before narrowing her gaze on him.
"What do you mean?" She shivers again, shoulders shaking with the force of it. It's a shock response, she knows this, but it does nothing to negate the bottomless pit of her stomach. Rick removes his jacket as he speaks.
"The victim is at least a day old, according to the doc- and it's clear she was brought here, not killed here. Plus-" he pauses as he drops the jacket around her shoulders, which she takes gratefully. "I shouldn't tell you about this, you're traumatized enough for one day." Still reeling from the kindness of him giving her his jacket, she takes a moment to process.
"No! I mean, I want to know." She nods, jaw clenching. "I just hope you find the son of a bitch." Beneath the all encompassing pain of losing someone so close, there's a rage simmering close to the surface.
"I-i'm sorry for your loss, Ali." He speaks the words as his hand drops to her shoulder, kneading softly. The action combined with his nickname for her should make her stomach flip- all she feels is numb.
"Thanks." Lexi smiles as best she can, wondering if it looks more like a grimace. She see's her dad weaving through cops and townsfolk alike to get to her. "Hey." She greets him, noticing the way Rick quickly steps away.
"Hey, are you okay?" He immediately asks, glancing her over. "I heard you found Missy."
"Uh- yeah." Lexi clears her throat, nodding. "She was all-" her words are cut off by a shiver. "Well R-Officer Sanchez got my statement already."
"I'm sorry ,sweetheart, I know you were friends." Her fathers sympathetic expression is almost enough to finally get her to shed a few tears. She swalls the sob.
"I threw up in the flower bed." Is what comes out instead, and its better than the alternative. Her dad cracks a smile at this, shaking his head.
"You should go inside and get some rest- my deputies checked the doors and none of them have been tampered with." Lexi nods, despite having no desire to go to bed and be met with nightmares. Still, she stands and goes to gingerly remove the jacket.
"Keep it, you can give it to you dad later." Rick stops her, sounding uncomfortable behind her father. Lexi nods, wrapping it tighter around herself as she nods to the brunette officer.
