Jennie sat on the couch, staring at her phone, willing it to ring. The time difference between her and Lisa was a constant hurdle, making their video calls and conversations sporadic and frustratingly short. Tonight was supposed to be their chance to catch up properly, but as the minutes ticked by, Jennie’s hope waned.
Lisa was working overseas on a demanding project, and their conflicting schedules often left them feeling more distant than the miles between them. Jennie glanced at the clock again and sighed. It was well past the time they had agreed on.
The phone finally buzzed, and Jennie snatched it up, relief flooding her features. “Lisa! I thought you weren’t going to call.”
On the other end, Lisa sounded exhausted. “I’m sorry, Jennie. I got caught up at work. I’m really sorry.”
Jennie’s relief quickly morphed into frustration. “This is the third time this week, Lisa. I feel like I’m always waiting for you, and you’re never there.”
Lisa’s silence was palpable. “I know. I’m trying, but it’s just so hard with everything going on here.”
Jennie’s voice rose, the pent-up emotions spilling over. “And what about me? What about us? You think it’s easy for me? I’m here, trying to keep us together, and you can’t even find time to talk to me!”
Lisa took a deep breath, her tone strained. “You think I don’t care? I’m doing my best, Jennie. I’m working insane hours. It’s not like I’m over here having fun without you.”
“Then show me, Lisa! Make an effort. I feel like I’m the only one who cares about this relationship,” Jennie shot back, tears of frustration stinging her eyes.
There was another long silence before Lisa spoke, her voice quiet and pained. “I do care, Jennie. I miss you every single day. I just don’t know how to make this work.”
Jennie’s voice softened slightly, but her hurt was still evident. “We need to find a way, Lisa. I can’t keep feeling like this, like I’m just an afterthought.”
Lisa’s silence stretched on, and Jennie’s heart sank. “Say something, Lisa. Please.”
“I… I don’t know what to say,” Lisa admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I feel like I’m failing you.”
Jennie’s anger melted into sadness. “I don’t want to fight, Lisa. I just want to be with you. But this distance… it’s taking a toll in me.”
Lisa’s voice cracked. “I know. I hate it too. I hate being so far from you, not being able to hold you or see your face. But I don’t know what to do.”
Jennie took a deep breath, trying to steady her emotions. “Maybe we need to be honest with each other about what we need. I need more from you, Lisa. More effort, more communication. I need to know that you’re in this with me.”
Lisa’s voice was small but earnest. “I am, Jennie. I promise I am. I’m just so tired and overwhelmed sometimes that I don’t know how to balance it all.”
Jennie’s heart ached at the vulnerability in Lisa’s voice. “I’m tired too, Lisa. But we have to find a way to make this work. Can we promise each other to try harder? To set aside time, no matter how busy we are?”
Lisa’s voice was soft but determined. “Yes, Jennie. I promise. I’ll do whatever it takes. I don’t want to lose you.”
Jennie’s tears finally fell, but this time they were tears of relief. “I don’t want to lose you either, Lisa. I love you too much.”
“I love you too, Jennie. More than anything,” Lisa said, her voice trembling with emotion.
Jennie smiled through her tears. “Okay. Let’s make a plan. Let’s set a time each day, even if it’s just for a few minutes, to really talk. And let’s be patient with each other.”
Lisa’s voice brightened slightly. “That sounds good. I can do that. I want to do that.”
Jennie felt a weight lift from her shoulders. “We’re going to get through this, Lisa. Together.”
“Yes, together,” Lisa agreed, her voice filled with hope. “I’m so sorry for everything, Jennie. I’ll do better.”
Jennie’s heart swelled with love and determination. “We both will. I believe in us.”
They spent the next few hours talking, sharing their fears and hopes, reconnecting in a way they hadn’t in a long time. By the end of the call, Jennie felt a renewed sense of optimism. They still had a long road ahead, but for the first time in weeks, she felt like they were on the same path, walking it together.
Before they hung up, Jennie whispered, “I can’t wait to hold you again, Lisa.”
Lisa’s voice was warm and tender. “Me too, baby. Me too. Until then, I’m with you, every step of the way.”
Jennie’s breath caught in her throat. It had been so long since Lisa had called her “baby.” The endearment, filled with so much love and sincerity, softened Jennie’s heart completely.
“Baby,” Jennie echoed, a tear rolling down her cheek. “I’ve missed hearing you call me that.”
Lisa’s voice was soft and filled with emotion. “I’ve missed saying it, Jennie. I love you so much.”
Jennie wiped her tears, a smile breaking through. “I love you too, Lisa. We’re going to make this work. I know we are.”
“Yes, we will,” Lisa affirmed, her voice steady and sure. “Together, baby.”
And with that, they ended the call, both feeling a little lighter, a little more connected, and a lot more hopeful about their future together.
