It has been hard, but I think I am starting to be okay. Yet, one message from you and, I'm back at step 1.

Jennie sat in her quiet apartment, the pale light of her phone illuminating her weary face. It had been months since she and Lisa had parted ways, their decision to break up a mutual agreement born out of love and understanding. Lisa needed time to heal from the loss of her mother, and Jennie had reluctantly accepted that their paths needed to diverge for now.
The nights were the hardest. Loneliness settled in like a heavy fog, reminding Jennie of the absence of Lisa's laughter, her warmth, and the comfort of her presence. She missed their late-night conversations, the shared dreams, and the effortless way they had always understood each other.
Despite her efforts to move forward, Jennie found herself lingering over old messages, staring at photos of them together, and replaying memories that brought both solace and pain. Should I reach out? The thought tugged at her heartstrings, a desperate plea for connection she knew might not be reciprocated in the way she hoped.
With a sigh, she picked up her phone and opened their old conversation thread. Her fingers trembled as she typed, pouring her heart into words she wasn't sure she should send.
Jennie: Lisa... I know we agreed to give each other space, and I've tried to respect that. But I miss you. I miss us. The nights are so empty without you. I understand why we had to break up, but it doesn't make it any easier. I just needed you to know...
She hesitated, her thumb hovering over the send button. Will this only make things harder?
Before she could decide, a new message popped up on her screen. Lisa's name glowed softly in the dim room, and Jennie's heart skipped a beat.
Lisa: Jennie... I've thought about you every day. I miss you too. It's been so hard, trying to heal without you by my side. I never wanted to ask you to wait for me because I don't know when or if I'll be ready. But if I could choose, Jennie, I'd still choose you.
Jennie's breath caught in her throat as tears welled in her eyes. Lisa's words were a balm to her heart, yet they carried a weight she couldn't ignore. She had hoped for reconciliation, but deep down, she knew she couldn't put her life on hold indefinitely.
Jennie: Lisa... I miss you more than words can say. But I can't keep waiting, not knowing if or when you'll be ready. It hurts too much. I need to start moving forward, even though it breaks my heart to say that.
She pressed send with a heavy heart, tears streaming down her cheeks. The truth was painful, but Jennie knew she needed to prioritize her own healing, even if it meant letting go of the hope of being with Lisa again.
Minutes stretched into eternity as Jennie waited for Lisa's response, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and sorrow. Finally, a message came through.
Lisa: Jennie... I understand. I'm so sorry for everything. For hurting you, for not being able to give you what you need right now. Please know that I'll always cherish what we had. If our paths align again in the future, I hope we can find each other. Until then, please take care of yourself.
Jennie let out a shaky breath, her fingers trembling as she wiped away tears. It wasn't the ending she had hoped for, but it was a necessary step toward her own healing. She closed her eyes, a bittersweet mix of sadness and relief washing over her.
Jennie: Thank you, Lisa. I'll always cherish our time together too. Take care of yourself.
And with that, Jennie set her phone down, her heart heavy yet a small glimmer of peace beginning to settle within her. Their paths had diverged for now, but she knew that in choosing to let go, she was also choosing herself. Somewhere deep inside, she hoped that one day, their paths might cross again—perhaps with healed hearts and a renewed chance at love.
