The high school gym stood in a strange twilight, decorated for prom night but completely empty.
Banners and streamers hung from the walls and ceiling, swaying gently in an unseen breeze, while balloons gathered in corners, casting long shadows in the faint light, flickering light of the prom lights.
"...all the other kids with the pumped up kicks..."The distorted notes of Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" echoed through the vast, empty space, playing as if from an old, scratched record. The melody was familiar yet unsettling, a cheerful tune swallowed by the silence.
Every detail of the room was perfect, but something surely felt wrong. The polished gym floor reflected the twinkling lights and neatly arranged tables and chairs, creating ghostly doubles that danced in the flickering light. A thin layer of dust covered everything, suggesting the preparations had been finished long ago but left untouched.
The scent of punch past its prime and faint traces of perfume lingered in the air, remnants of a party that never happened. The distant hum of the school's fluorescent lights added to the feeling of quiet waiting, a background noise that heightened the sense of eerie expectations.
