pov Azula

Eight years have passed since the end of the Hundred Years' War. My elder brother took the throne of the nation of fire and I accepted it. A year in a mental hospital and two years of wandering led me on my own path.

Right now I live on a small mountain where I can watch the city in the nation of fire, but no one can watch me and my life. I have my own vegetable garden, a courtyard where I can relax on a shizlong, even a small hot spring.

People living nearby don't know who I really am and I'm glad of it. They didn't look at me as a monster. Although I'm still afraid that the residents will find out who I really am, and I'm even more afraid to tell this to one girl. She will be taken away..

— Azula.

I got a little lost in my thoughts and, out of fright, heated my tea to boiling water. I hope she didn't notice that....

I shifted my gaze from the mug from which steam began to flow to the girl standing in the doorway and looking at me with a strained smile. Having lived with her for five years now, I can say that there is nothing good behind this insidious smile.

— Yes Y/N?

She began to approach me like a hunter who had trapped his prey. I could only calmly sip my tea and wait.

Please tell me Azula. Do you happen to know what happened to the princess of the Nation of fire?

My eyes widened and, unable to resist, I immediately spat the tea aside.

—Haha, why are you asking such questions, honey? No, I do not know what happened to the princess, I only know that...

It was hard for me to talk about my past, but it was worth doing it once.

— I know that before the defeat of the fire lord, she was not herself and that then she was imprisoned for a while. That's all I know about the princess.

There was silence in the house for a while, but Y/N reached into her bag and pulled out some paper.

— So the soldiers aren't looking for you, Princess Azula?

A 14-year-old Azula was drawn on paper, a lot has changed in eight years and now Azula has stopped looking like her former self, but the main facial features remain. Over time, she grew into a good girl, just like her mother.

— It's not me. Just what kind of girl is that. I don't look like her, and besides, she's the daughter of the last lord, so she should be able to use fire magic, and I'm just a girl.

Azula said this with sadness in her eyes, but she kept a soft smile on her face, looking at her former self and remembering the old days. Turning her gaze to her neighbor, she saw that the girl sitting opposite her was smiling and looking tenderly into the eyes of the grown-up princess. Azula was a little embarrassed, but did not look away.

— Wh—what, why are you looking at me like that?

Y/N took her hand in his and interlaced her fingers.

— So it's not you who heats the hot spring on cold days? And you're not the one warming up my tea when it's already cold? And your hands aren't warm from the fire inside you? I am not as naive as the old residents living in the neighborhood.

The girl took the mug and put it on the other end of the table.

— Darling, you appeared in my life out of nowhere, all beaten up, dirty and talking nonsense. Although you don't remember it, you often talked at night in the first months, and I already learned a lot about you then. Azula, there's nothing wrong with telling me who you really are.

You hugged the girl's head while she listened in silence. After a moment of thought, Azula raised her palm and just stared at it

— I'm me. I'm Azula. I am the daughter of Lord Ozai, the sister of the current Lord of fire and a warrior of the nation of fire.

At that moment, she showed her blue fire, which she had so carefully hidden for five years. Y/N couldn't help but notice the mesmerizing beauty of the fire.

— But I'm also an ordinary girl who wants to be happy. And I think that you are my happiness, but if after this confession I scared you, I will leave and not bother you anymore, and also surrender to the army of fire.

The princess expected anything but a kiss. It was a quick kiss, but it was better than any words. Azula took the girl by the waist while she buried her hands in her beautiful black hair. After a couple of seconds, they pulled away from each other.

— Azula, I can't imagine my life without you, but you can't always live like a runaway. It's been four years since you've completely cleared your mind. I saw with my own eyes how you changed, how much you did for the residents of the neighboring village. Don't you want to meet your brother? I'll take any choice you make and follow you, just know that.

The girls looked into each other's eyes until the Princess began to cry, she clung to the girl like a little child while she stroked her hair.

— I want to! I've wanted to for a long time, but I'm so afraid of what might happen! What if I lose my mind again when I see my brother or the castle? I don't want to hurt anyone, especially you.

Y/N whispered gentle words until Azula calmed down, only after 15 minutes of silence the girl looked into her lover's face and saw that she had fallen asleep. She carefully put her head on the pillow and lay down next to her so that her girlfriend would not be alone.
