Leno
Half of the group was already on the dancefloor, moving to the rhythm of Lucas' set, while I enjoyed my cocktail at Elise's booth. Ikshan was fidgeting, and I knew they wanted to join the others. Instead, they were staying with me and as a result, they were at least on their fifth anecdote. Elise looked at them with a smile, listening patiently.
"Ikshan, sweetie," she finally interrupted, putting her hand on their arm. "You want to dance, maybe?"
"They do," I answered with a sigh. "It's just... I can't dance. At all. And they don't want to leave me alone."
"Aww, that is so sweet," she said. "But I am sure you can dance, Leno. You have not enough practice, that is all."
"Please, help him," Ikshan whined. "I tried, but I failed. Miserably."
I felt my cheeks becoming dangerously hot.
Elise grinned. "Do you trust me with the love of your life?" She asked them.
"Yes," Ikshan said. "Please. You're my last hope."
She stood and extended her hand towards me. I froze.
"Do not worry, honey. It is going to be fun. I promise."
I took her hand and let her lead me to the dancefloor. Joe, Anna, and Jimena cheered, while James narrowed his eyes and gave me an "O.K. that should be interesting" look.
I looked at my feet, my face probably getting redder by the minute.
Elise showed me very simple moves and guided me through the rhythm. Her smile was contagious, and I loosened up a little. Amaury made some suggestions, often immediately corrected by a "Actually, it would be simpler for you to do this" by Aidan. It was followed by a demonstration that showed me the vampire was not a comfortable dancer but managed to have fun, anyway. I couldn't ask for more. If he could do it, I could too. I was on a mission.
Then I felt Ikshan's arms around my waist and their tall body towered over me from behind. They rested their head on my shoulder and swayed with me, letting the music envelop us. I closed my eyes and breathed their scent. It felt so right.
I turned around and, in a wave of confidence, I improvised some dance moves. For real. Not too sophisticated but heartfelt. The giant grin on Ikshan's face encouraged me and they joined me with a boldness in their moves I would probably envy for the rest of my life.
Elise nodded with approbation and joined Aidan before she looked at the hour and told us it was time for the Saturday Night Challenge.
James was already on stage, and when he read the paper, he looked directly at Elise. "This one is for you, my queen. It's "Happy For You" by Dua Lipa. Would you do us the honor? I might do the back vocals. If I feel like it."
Elise laughed and joined him on stage. And Ikshan and I swung together during the entire song, their arms around me and their hands in mine.
