"Seed of a Seed," Haley Heynderickx

I told Valentina she could go home. Even if I did not think that Nawel was dangerous at the moment, it was safer not to have humans in the same room than an unknown vampire. I switched on the lights in the courtyard. In the night's chill air, the small central garden had an eerie quality.

"Do you want me to call someone?" Valentina whispered.

I shook my head. "No, it is fine. Thank you, honey. I got this."

She nodded and left.

"Maybe I can show you the place?" I said to Nawel when we were alone.

She nodded, and I led her through the courtyard. At first, she kept her eyes on me, but when I slowed down and described the shelter's amenities, she finally looked around.

"It's a beautiful place," she said, her hands in her pockets.

"Thank you. I am glad you like it."

After a tour of the main areas, we sat in the common room, and I offered her some coffee.

"First, I have to tell you something," I said, while she looked at me warily. "Stanislas is part of the project."

A multiplicity of emotions crossed her face. Among them, there was fear but she was also hopeful. So I knew it would be okay.

"You do not have to interact with him if you do not want to. None of you have to."

She stayed silent and leaned on the back of the couch.

"It's not that I don't want to see him," she finally said with a clear voice. "It's just I'm scared of the fact I want to."

Her eyes searched mine, almost in a challenge.

"I understand. Would you tell me what it is you are looking for here?"

She stood up and looked at the books on the shelves, running her fingers on the edge, choosing one to look at the cover. I waited, taking a sip of my coffee.

Then she put the book down and turned around. "I switched to blood bags," she said, "but... I'm scared of slipping. Of attacking someone. It's going to happen. It's not if, it's when. I can feel it."

I kept my focus on her eyes and my tone even. "We can help you with that. Congratulations for taking this first step. It is a huge one."

She hesitated as if she thought I was mocking her. As if she could not believe I was not judging her. And slowly, the corner of her lips twitched, and she smiled. While I grinned back at her, her smile reached her eyes and she seemed more relaxed.

She sat back in front of me and grabbed the mug in front of her.

"So how does it work? Can I bring other people?"
