A week of torment... that's what I had to endure. Not the typical torment, no... this was a new level from Darla. It was night after night of her being super loud in her room with her husband... they were so obnoxious with their headboard slamming into the wall that separated my room from theirs... that by Friday night, they had successfully made a nice hole in the wall, right clear into my room. It wasn't large, but it made them even louder, and also enabled the two of them to peek in on me. So I had moved my bed and moved my bookcase right in front of the hole by Saturday night. Monday morning... my patience was pushed over the edge.
"Why do you look like that? Every morning. I tell you to go to bed early and you wake up with bags under your eyes, your face puffy or eyes puffy, what the hell is wrong with you?" Mother was scolding me again.
"We are a day away from the biggest day of our lives and you look like that? I was never expecting you to look like a model, but this.... Lenna, this is ridiculous." She snapped her fingers and one of the maids came rushing over. "Get her a face mask, some cucumber slices and take her to Francis in the other room." My mother barked her orders and as usual.... The maid followed her command.
"I swear, she was up all night again, mother. Reading those books you allow her to have. And she plays music and it's really disturbing to us. You know my husband has to work... I mean.. Did you know she kicked a hole in the wall? It goes right through to our room. I tried to tell father but he was busy and you know I don't like to complain." Darla was twisting the truth, and of course... I was going to pay for it...*SMACK*
"You want to put holes in my walls? Huh"
*SMACK*
"You ungrateful little bitch!"
*Smack*
"Father, she's getting married tomorrow, be mindful of her face." Darla was smiling as she spoke.
"Yes darling, we don't want to disappoint the Min's tomorrow, or embarrass ourselves." Mother said.
"Fine..."
*SMACK*
I was already on the floor after the first hit. I knew at this point to just let it happen. Hiding would do me no good. After they calmed down that evening, My mother had me go to bed early with nothing. I wasn't permitted to drink or eat. All week my food intake was lessened.... Not that I ate much anyway because of their watchful eyes.
I was in for a surprise when I went into my room. My bookcase... gone.. My CD collection, gone, the only thing in my room was one suitcase and all that was in it... were clothes that were chosen for me by my mother. I changed into the pajamas that were laid out for me, and climbed into bed. I ended up crying myself to sleep, praying to a god I wasn't sure existed that tomorrow would be better, that this life I was being forced into was better... it had to be better than this. The morning came, and I was woken up early. I was bathed, and put into a silk slip with a robe that covered me.
"Let's go, we have so much to do and not a lot of time. Lenna, wait." Mother said as she instructed everyone out of the house. Mother looked me over, she turned my head and looked carefully at my face.
"Good, not much swelling today, not as puffy, I think Francis can work with this." She said.
"Alright, let's go. Emily will bring your things to your new house." She commented as she hurried out the door. I was struggling to keep up with her. I was thankful I wasn't riding with my sister. However I did notice I had bridesmaids and I didn't know a single one of them.
I should have expected something like this. I don't even know why I was so surprised. The ride was mostly silent, other than Mother making sure the other women in the car knew what they were supposed to do. I was a little surprised I wasn't grilled... but then, we were in a car full of other people... My mother wouldn't risk showing her true colors to people outside of our family.
We pulled up to this very large stone church. There was a red carpet being laid out down the front white stone steps by two men. People were scurrying in, the bridesmaids in the car got out and went right in. Mother grabbed my things and handed them to a woman who came rushing out of the church and over to us.
