I sat at my desk inside the feared Robinson Hall—feared, of course, only at this time of the year, or should I say, at this time of the semester. I was writing my final exams for the first semester of the year 2002. The course was Evangelism. “Ah, easy,” you might be tempted to think. “That’s just about preaching and winning souls for the kingdom.” Thankfully, I was smart enough not to be thus deluded. From the first day we sat in that class and our professor made his introductory remarks, we knew we were in for a rough ride. This class was going to be no walkover.
It would not be just about visiting evangelistic campaigns and taking notes. But even with this timely appraisal, that semester, and that class in particular, was to become the most exasperating challenge that I would have to deal with during my seminary years. The challenge came about as a result of three main factors. The first was based upon the structure of the course. Unlike most other classes, the final grade was determined by the student’s performance on the mid-semester examination and the end-of-semester final exam along with a research paper. Other courses featured multiple tests or sectionals, which clearly favored the student.
