In the vibrant chaos of Shanghai, Xiao Zhan (A psychiatrist) and Yibo (A lawyer) carved a life of quiet contentment. They had met in college, fallen deeply in love. Though their love, as a gay couple, had faced societal hurdles.......bound by love and commitment they successfully had built a home together. The only thing missing from their lives was a child to nurture and love.
Their greatest joy arrived in the form of a seven years tiny spark of hope they adopted. They named him Yuan. In Chinese Yuan was supposed to use Xiao Yuan, where in English it was going to be Yuan Wang.....Together Xiao Yuan Wang.
Officially, Yuan was their brother as laws didn't permit them to adopt him as parents, but within the walls of their haven, he was their son, and they were his fathers.
From the beginning, Zhan and Yibo were determined to be the pillars of Yuan's world. Work, chores, and the constant vigil of parenthood became their dance, a routine honed by unwavering dedication. Sleepless nights whispering reassurances during nightmares, countless explanations of homework problems, attending school meetings with hearts full of pride - these were the threads woven into the tapestry of their days.
They faced prejudice and discrimination from their extended family and society. Simple activities like attending parent-teacher meetings or family gatherings were often fraught with tension. But Zhan and Yibo stood firm, their love for Yuan stronger than any external judgment.
Yet, a shadow lingered. Yuan, despite their unwavering love, clung to the term "gege" (brother), a constant reminder of the unspoken truth. Zhan and Yibo, understanding the complexities of a child's heart, never forced the issue. Their priority was his happiness, his blossoming.
Years melted into one another, each marked by Yuan's quiet brilliance. He excelled in school, his mind a whirlwind of scientific curiosity. Zhan and Yibo were ever-present shadows, their cheers echoing from the sidelines, their love a constant source of strength through every triumph, big or small.
Fifteen years slipped by, a bittersweet symphony of joy and silent heartache. Yuan stood poised to receive his excellence award, and Zhan and Yibo's hearts swelled with a pride that threatened to burst. As they sat in the grand auditorium, memories flickered through their minds - the nervous joy of bringing Yuan home, his first meal with them, their first shopping, school visit, park, adventures, night walks, those days when Yuan used to not well, the countless "good mornings" whispered before he fluttered open his eyes and the unconditional adoration they had for Yuan.
When Yuan's turn for the acceptance speech came, he began by thanking his teachers, mentors, allies and not to forget his parents......for the last 15 years Yuan never forgot for once to recall his parents on each auspicious day and event of his life. A hush fell as he paused, his gaze locking with Zhan and Yibo in the front row.
"Today, I have a wish. I wish my parents stand by my side on this stage and I hope my parents will fulfil that as they are doing for the last 15 years" Yuan's voice trembled, a vulnerability that tugged at Zhan and Yibo's heartstrings while rest of the people stared in confuse as how Yuan's dead parents could be present there.
