Chapter 6: Finding a Friend
After the breakfast table fell into an awkward silence, everyone quietly dispersed to their rooms. I could feel the tension lingering in the air, and Sergei’s hurtful words echoed in my mind.
I stayed behind to clean up, mechanically washing the dishes and wiping down the counters, trying to push away the sting of his hostility.
Once the kitchen was spotless, I retreated to my room, feeling utterly alone and unsure of my place in this vast house. I sat on the edge of the bed, staring out the window, lost in my thoughts.
How could I ever fit into this family? Would Sergei ever accept me?
A soft knock on the door pulled me from my reverie. Before I could respond, the door creaked open, and Yuri’s head popped in, his mischievous grin lighting up the room. His bright blue eyes sparkled with a playful light, and his blond hair was tousled, as if he’d just rolled out of bed.
"Hey, Sia," he said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "Mind if I come in?"
I shook my head, managing a small smile.
He plopped down on the bed beside me, his presence filling the room with a warmth I hadn’t felt in a long time. "So, I figured you could use a tour of the estate. It’s pretty big, and it can be easy to get lost if you don’t know your way around."
I nodded, grateful for the distraction.
"Great! Let’s get going then," he said, standing up and offering me his hand.
I took it, and we left my room, Yuri leading me down the long hallways of the mansion. The walls were adorned with beautiful paintings, and the floors were covered in plush, luxurious carpets. The house was a maze of rooms and corridors, each more grand than the last. Yuri pointed out various rooms and shared little anecdotes about each one. His lighthearted commentary and jokes about our brothers made me laugh, easing some of the tension I’d been carrying.
As we walked through the house, Yuri’s playful nature shone through. He recounted a time when Alexei accidentally locked himself in the library for hours, too proud to call for help. We both laughed at the thought of the serious and composed Alexei stuck in such a predicament.
"Alexei’s always trying to act so perfect," Yuri said with a chuckle. "But even he has his moments."
We reached the expansive garden, and I was struck by its beauty. Flowers of every color bloomed in carefully tended beds, and the air was filled with their sweet fragrance. Tall, graceful trees shaded the pathways, and the sound of birds chirping created a peaceful symphony. Yuri led me to a small, secluded spot near a fountain, where the sound of trickling water added to the peaceful ambiance.
"This is one of my favorite spots," Yuri said, sitting on the edge of the fountain. The fountain was made of smooth, white marble, and the water sparkled in the sunlight. "It’s a great place to think or just escape from the craziness of the house."
I sat beside him, feeling a sense of calm wash over me. The garden was like a sanctuary, a world away from the chaos and tension inside the mansion. I glanced at Yuri, wanting to thank him for his kindness, but the fear of speaking held me back. I remembered the countless times my stepfather had punished me for uttering even a word out of turn.
"Yeah, it is," Yuri agreed, oblivious to my inner turmoil. "But you know, it’s even better now that I have someone to share it with."
We sat in comfortable silence for a while, just enjoying the tranquility of the garden. Yuri’s presence was a balm to my wounded soul, and I felt a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, I could find a place here.
"You know, Sergei’s always been a bit... intense," Yuri said after a while, breaking the silence. "But don’t let him get to you. He’s got his own demons to fight."
I nodded, appreciating his honesty. I wanted to tell him how much it hurt, how afraid I was to speak, but the words stuck in my throat, a familiar and frustrating feeling. Instead, I gestured vaguely, hoping he would understand my gratitude.
"You don’t talk much, do you?" Yuri asked, a teasing smile on his lips. "It’s okay. Sometimes it’s better to listen than to speak, especially in this family."
I managed a small, grateful smile, thankful for his lighthearted approach.
"You do belong here," Yuri said firmly. "It’s going to take time, but we’ll get there. And in the meantime, you’ve got me."
"Thank you, Yuri," I mouthed again, my eyes conveying what my voice couldn’t.
"Anytime, sis," he replied with a wink. "Now, let me show you the stables. We’ve got some amazing horses, and I think you’ll love them."
He helped me up, and we continued our tour of the estate. The stables were a short walk from the garden, nestled in a picturesque corner of the property. The building was large and well-maintained, with fresh hay and the comforting smell of horses. As we approached, a few horses poked their heads out of their stalls, curious and friendly.
"This is Thunder," Yuri said, pointing to a sleek black stallion. "He’s a bit of a show-off, but he’s got a good heart."
I reached out to gently stroke Thunder’s nose, feeling a connection with the powerful animal. Yuri introduced me to each of the horses, sharing stories about their personalities and quirks.
As we walked, Yuri’s easygoing nature made me feel more at ease with each passing moment. The estate was beautiful, and Yuri’s company was a welcome relief from the harsh realities I’d faced. Despite the challenges ahead, I realized I wasn’t alone. I had Yuri by my side, and maybe, just maybe, that was enough to start healing.
