"Mag, this is the third day after the due date for the submission of your unpublished book for editing. Why have you not sent it? You cannot keep all your readers waiting. You have given them a release date, and if you don't submit it today, I am afraid we won't be able to meet it. After I edit, I still need to give it to the creative director for his own touch. You are delaying, Mag. You still need to..."

"Ring me up with Ken, Tom," Mag rudely interrupted. She hadn't listened to half of what Tom was saying.

"Ken? That crook? So you mean all I have said didn't make any sense to you? We both know that he won't respond. Let us let bygones be bygones, please."

Mag didn't say anything.

"You have a mentorship class tomorrow, the book is unfinished, and all you can think of right now is Ken. I think I need to come over; you don't seem to be in the right state of mind."

"You don't need to," Mag responded subtly. Deep inside, she wanted him to come.

"I know what you're like. I'll be there in a bit," said Tom, not giving her a chance to decide if he should come or not.

Tom got out of his house and went straight to his car. He stopped at the sweet shop to get Mag her favorite chocolates and then made a quick stop at the flower shop to get her favorite flowers, lilies.

He got to her house in 20 minutes and rang the doorbell. Mag had been waiting for him, so she didn't even wait for Frances to answer the doorbell. She ran to rest her head on his shoulders and broke into tears. Tom understood what she was going through and embraced her with an intimate hug. "I brought you your favorite flowers and chocolates. I hope it makes you feel better. I knew something was wrong; you always submit before the due date."

"Let's go into the room. I don't trust those maids for a thing," Mag said.

"The room?" Tom responded shyly.

"Yeah, sure. I feel safer there."

They went into the room, holding hands. They sat on the bed, and Mag narrated the whole incident that had played out earlier that morning.

"I really don't know what to do," Mag said, almost crying.

Tom abruptly planted a kiss on her lips. He didn't know what to do, and he felt that was the best way to console her. Shockingly, Mag returned the kiss. He had not expected it. He thought to himself, Does she like me? He had liked her before but never tried to ask if the feeling was mutual.

"Ma'am, your meal is ready," Frances interrupted abruptly.

"Can't you knock?" Mag snapped, irked by the intrusion.

Apologizing, Frances left hastily, leaving Mag and Tom to contemplate their unspoken feelings.

"Maybe it's time for me to go," Tom suggested quietly, hurt by Mag's earlier dismissal.

"We're friends," Mag clarified, seeking to restore normalcy.

"Friends," Tom echoed, masking disappointment. "I'll see you at the mentorship class tomorrow."

As Tom left, Mag pondered the tangled web of emotions and secrets unraveling around her. Could Daniel be the key to unlocking her past, or was it a fleeting hope? Lost in uncertainty, she resolved to confront her buried truths, no matter the cost.

Tom maintained an angered face, all through his ride home but deep inside, he was hurt.

"Just friends."
